  • Starting Atkins today

Hi there all you wonderful Atkins dieters. I'm Shanna from Australia. I am starting Atkins TODAY. My daughter has lost over 20 kilos (not sure what that is in lbs) I have read the Diet Revolution Book. Any Aussies out there who can advise on products and exchange foods for Atkins here in Australia. Any help would be SOOO appreciated.

    Welcome!

    20 kilos is 44 pounds.

Have you read the 2002 edition of the book?

What products are you looking for?

What "exchange foods" are you looking for?

          Welcome to the Atkins Board.

Glad you found the board and are excited about starting the plan. There are other Aussies here, you'll just have to look for them!! Make sure you read the book - it will give you the knowledge you need to get to your goal.

Plan your meals for a fews days so you have everything in your home and you won’t be tempted to eat something not allowed. Eat only foods listed on the acceptable food list and eat a variety of foods and vegetables. (Atkins Diet Induction FAQs) http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.com/forums/atkins-diet-14-day-induction/77558-atkins-diet-induction-faqs.html.

Drink a minimum 64 ounces (about 1.89 litre) of pure water (nothing added), exercise and take a non-iron multivitamin daily. Look at the challenges to see if there is anything that interests you - start a journal, it's a great place to get everything out in the open, be accountable to yourself - you'll also meet some great people there! http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...journal-chats/. There’s something for everyone here!

Check Linda's recipe site it will help keep you from eating the same thing over and over -- http://www.genaw.com/lowcarb/menus.html . If you need anything we’re here to help you!!

          Good luck to you!
          Carole

            Re: Starting Atkins today

thanks everyone, for the support. I'm finding some Aussie alternatives as I search supermarkets. Haven't found a Bakers Mix alternative as yet but I won't need it for a while. Our Woolies and Coles Supermarkets are now stocking some Atkins Products as in Bars and Shakes - excellent.

            HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE

Many will advise you to avoid these, especially in Induction.

Atkins isn't about "products" ... it's about "whole, unprocessed food".

                Re: Starting Atkins today

thanks for the advice. I was thinking with Christmas and New Year Holidays, travelling, visiting kids/grandkids etc, they would help in 'nothing for me to eat' situation. Not as a permanent solution. But it's working out OK so far....mind you it's only day 2.

Well, Christmas is over, so that's one occasion over with!

If you can't bring real food with you to have, then yes, a bar/shake might work. It's not a substitute for real food though! Nor is it a meal.

If it's meals you're having trouble with, then it might be helpful to offer to bring something when you're visiting, so that you will have something to eat.

                    Re: Starting Atkins today

when I get ready to go anywhere I put a bag of cut up veggies in my purse, I've also taken pickles, meat slices, cheese sticks and take a bottle of water to drink.

The baking mix alternative you talk about isn't allowed until you move to OWL (ongoing weight loss) and is further up the rungs so I wouldn't worry about it. Like J said about shakes and bars they slow or stop a lot of people's weight loss so if you use them just understand that from the beginning. We don't consider them "induction" food and should be used for emergency further up the rungs.

Have you found any other Aussies yet?

Thanks heaps. For me - the evenings are BAD. It's my 'I want to munch out time' Any ideas? Have you found any alternative Aust. named bands/foods. We don't have some of the food brands mentined in the Aitkins books? Fires bad in WA. Hope your not close.

If it's only a bad habit, it's best to break it.

You mean... Atkins products? You don't need them. Whole foods are much better.

                            Re: Starting Atkins today

Um I hand sew...you can't smoke or eat when you are using both of your hands....I find that the 'munchies' are not from hunger for me but more from boredom or restlessness...I know I have to keep either my brains or hands busy.

Queens makes a zero carb maple flavoured syrup...its in either Coles of Woolworths

Also I have found a product called AJAR...which is a squished smoked red capsicum as an alternative to tomato paste...I eat it with steak or to make a taco sauce...works like a dream and much less carbs...

Once you are 'full' on acceptable foods...you are really forcing yourself to eat extra when you are munching...if you need sweet...and I did for the first few weeks (the brain wouldnt accept that I didnt actually need it) I got some chokos...zapped them in the microwave...fried them in butter and cinnimon and added some stevia (i prefer the liquid as it has no carbs in the filler like the pills or powder). Or even rhubarb...I like sour foods though...

Linda's site has some good recipes you can play with....I guess for me the most important thing was to cook 3 times a day...keep it interesting....vary the textures and flavours...and because I wasnt buying any junk food at all I could afford to buy nicer cuts of meat and fish...it feels good to spoil yourself with quality

There's nothing wrong with tomato paste ... as long as it doesn't have added sugar.
