  • Here I am

New Years eve found me in the parking lot at Wal*Mart, waiting for my daughter to show up with my grandkids. I had bought a few groceries, and was sitting in the car eating some chocolate covered peanuts...and then my future walked in front of me...
There was a lady about 10 years older than myself...she was wearing clothes that looked like she just didn't care anymore. She was shuffling along walking with a cane. She was wearing flip flops because her extremely swollen feet and ankles couldn't have fit into any shoes. Her hair was a mess and she had that skunk stripe going on. The way she walked with her back hunched over you could tell that life had become a chore, and she had resigned herself to the way it had become.
I couldn't stop staring and the image is ingrained into my mind. It was truely "But for the grace of God there go I." I stopped eating the peanuts, tied the bag shut, and threw them on the floorboard.
I had to make a change...I know that my weakness is sweets and breads. So I looked for something that would work for me.
I looked over this website New Years eve and it looks like a good support place. I called a friend who I knew had the original copy of the Atkins book and borrowed it.
So here I am on day two of induction, with 150 lbs to lose.

My one and only resolution to myself this year is that
I WILL NOT BECOME THE WOMAN THAT I SAW.

    Welcome, Katie!

I called a friend who I knew had the original copy of the Atkins book and borrowed it.
It's best to have your own copy. You'll need to refer to it often.

the original copy of the Atkins book
Is this the 1972 edition? At ADBB we go by the 2002 edition of Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution. There's 30 years of Dr. Atkins' experience with his patients that you're missing if you go by the 1972 book.

And since we get this question often... yes, the differences between the two are significant.

      Welcome!

Reading the original 1972 book is good history, however, you really need the 2002 edition of Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution; that's what's followed here.

      Until then:

Good job on throwing the peanuts away!

        Re: Here I am

I just left the goodwill store in our area and they had two copies of DANDR on the shelves.
Welcome, and I love your story. I have been there and done that myself. The flipflops make me shutter because its cold and wet here but I have seen the same. Poor thing.

          Welcome to the Atkins Board.

Glad you found the board and are excited about starting the plan. Make sure you read the book - it will give you the knowledge you need to get to your goal. If you can’t find a copy of the 2002 Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution (DANDR) locally check online at www.half.com or www.amazon.com. (I recently bought a "used" hardbound copy for less than $5.00 including shipping - when I got the book it was brand new - never opened!) Eat only foods listed on the acceptable food list and eat a variety of foods and vegetables. (Atkins Diet Induction FAQs) http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.com/forums/atkins-diet-14-day-induction/77558-atkins-diet-induction-faqs.html.

Plan your meals for a fews days so you have everything in your home and you won’t be tempted to eat something not allowed. Drink a minimum 64 ounces of pure water (nothing added), exercise and take a non-iron multivitamin daily. Look at the challenges to see if there is anything that interests you - start a journal, it's a great place to get everything out in the open, be accountable to yourself - you'll also meet some great people there! http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...journal-chats/. There’s something for everyone here!

Check Linda's recipe site it will help keep you from eating the same thing over and over -- http://www.genaw.com/lowcarb/menus.html . If you need anything we’re here to help you!!

          Good luck to you!

Thank you for all your support. The copy of the book that I got from a friend was the 2002 copy, and she gave it to me.

This is day three for me, so far so good.

                  Welcome to ADBB Katie,
You have been given some wonderful advice, and yes, read the book and follow it. It is imperative for success. You have posted quite a very thoughtful introduction. May I suggest that you start a journal, and copy and paste that into the first page. If you are tempted to cheat or slip, you can refer back and read your journal.
                  Best Wishes in this journey
