  • A nervous hello...

Hello. I'm here to introduce myself. I'm starting Atkins for the second time as of 1/1/10. I started it 2008 but got derailed. This time I really want to do it. I remember how great I started to feel once I'd been on Atkins for a few weeks, and I want to feel the energy and vitality that I'd felt. I've finally hit the point of pain where I'm willing to focus my energy on getting healthy, changing my way of life, and really beginning to live again. I'm here for support, as I won't be getting much of it at home. My dh, while kind and wonderful, is one of the most self-centered eaters I've ever come across, and historically has fought me tooth and nail about changing our lifestyle to a more healthy one. I don't think he means to be harmful, but whether on purpose or not, he is. So, that is why I'm here. Please be frank with me, and I'll do the same.

      Hi Mission to Lose,

Thanks for the welcome. Yes, I do have the 2002 book, and am rereading it now. I hope that my dh can see my results and climb aboard with me too.

            Hi and welcome!

My husband and my mother (who lives with us) aren't following Atkins with me. I've learned to fix meat for all of us then add things for them that are different that what I'm eating - when they have a mac & cheese, I have mock-a-foni & cheese - if they have a baked potato, I have loaded cauliflower....you just have to learn to deal with "weird" eaters (as I call them).

Go to Linda's site http://www.genaw.com/lowcarb/menus.htmland find things you'll enjoy eating (and maybe he'll enjoy also)....when we have stuffed peppers from Linda's site everyone eats...they don't even realize it's "diet" food! They also like the mockafoni & cheese (but I don't make it for all of us usually - it's MINE....ALLLLL MINE!!!) lol.

Glad you found the board and are excited about starting the plan. Plan your meals for a fews days so you have everything in your home and you won’t be tempted to eat something not allowed. Drink a minimum 64 ounces of pure water (nothing added), exercise and take a non-iron multivitamin daily. Look at the challenges to see if there is anything that interests you - start a journal, it's a great place to get everything out in the open, be accountable to yourself - you'll also meet some great people there! http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...journal-chats/. There’s something for everyone here!

            Good luck to you!!

              Re: A nervous hello...

Woo, boy. Here comes a dose of frankness.

I know nothing of your history, psychological makeup or marital relationship. But I assume you didn't marry until you reached adulthood, didn't have your husband surgically attached to your hip so you two ate the exact same things daily, and haven't been tied to a chair and force-fed by Kevin Spacey's character from Se7en. So, make sure you are assuming 100% responsibility and accountability for the food you eat - that's the only way to maintain any weight loss long term.

I have to deal with a husband with a different way of eating, too (even though he would state he was "on Atkins" for a little while...he really wasn't), so I really can empathize with this situation. My husband has even thrown a mini temper tantrum when I refused to eat Dreamfields pasta, so I know what the dark side of dietary difference is like, too. So when I say 100% responsible and accountable, I say it from experience and with love. (With some snark thrown in, but that's just me being me.)

To that end, if you bite it, write it. (Was that an Atkinsgal08 original saying? Dunno - props to the original author!) Keeping a good record of your daily food consumption will keep you honest, accountable and allow you to quickly notice patterns if you run into any obstacles. If you keep a little notebook with you, then log it into FitDay or Nutrition Data or FatSecret at the end of the day, that may make it a bit easier to track your consumption.

Carol--Thank you for the info and the links. I'll be sure to check them out. The water is gonna be a struggle for me, but I think that will be my first 'goal'.

Shrew--LOL. Thanks for the honesty. I'll check out the online food logs. I'd never heard of them before...and if it keeps me real, all the better.
