  • I am so excited!! Throw South Beach Diet!!!

I am new and decided to give Atkins a try as I kept failing on South Beach Diet. I ended up gaining back even more after I stopped doing South Beach Diet. Atkins plan looks more direct than South Beach Diet. I am a pecan lover and SBD allows nuts on diet plan but I ate so much of nuts. It is very hard to follow if I am allowed to eat nuts. No way!

Anyway, I will see how this Atkins plan going for me and I will keep you posted! I am on third day of Atkins Induction!

    Welcome!

Do you own a copy of Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution (2002)? Are you reading it?

It is very hard to follow if I am allowed to eat nuts.
Atkins allows you to eat nuts, too... once you get to OWL Rung 3. It doesn't mean you have to eat nuts though.

      Welcome to the Atkins Board.

Hi and welcome to ADBB. I’m glad you found the board and are ready to start the plan. We don't consider the Atkins plan to be a "diet" you jump on and off of - it's a way of eating (WOE) for a lifetime - hopefully you are commiting to this as a lifestyle change.

Make sure you read the book - it will give you the knowledge you need to get to your goal -find a copy locally of the 2002 Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution (DANDR) and read it as soon as you can.

Plan your meals for a few days so you have everything in your home and you won’t be tempted to eat something not allowed. Eat only foods listed on the acceptable food list http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...induction.html (What foods can be eaten on Induction?) make sure you eat a variety of foods and vegetables and count all “net carbs”. Check Linda's recipe site it will help keep you from eating the same thing over and over --
      http://www.genaw.com/lowcarb/menus.html.

Drink a minimum 64 ounces of pure water (nothing added), exercise and take a non-iron multivitamin daily. Look at the challenges to see if there is anything that interests you - start a journal, it's a great place to get everything out in the open, be accountable to yourself - you'll also meet some great people there! http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...journal-chats/. There’s something for everyone here!

If you need anything we’re here to help you!!

      Good luck to you!
      Carole

        Welcome
Just follow the plan to a T.

I am allowed to eat nuts but I stay away from most of them. Too addictive.

Welcome Alexanderia, glad you found us. I found SB to be very hard to follow myself. Since you know nuts are a problem, your that much ahead of the game.

Nuts are not allowed during Induction. As Georgiana mentioned above, you can add them in once you reach OWL rung 3.

I also came here after doing South Beach. I thought it was an excellent plan but after a few months, my weight loss slowed to a crawl. Even though I was doing Phase 2 with only one fruit and one grain per day (the unofficial Phase 1.5) I suspected that I was still having too many carbs. After learning about Atkins, I realized that my daily steel-cut oats (with a bit of agave nectar and milk) and the required daily serving of beans (1/3-1/2 cup) PLUS a fruit put me way over my carb level for weight loss.

Atkins is working very well for me and I hope you find it works for you too. The hardest part for me in the beginning of my transition from SBD to Atkins was to get the low-fat mentality out of my mind. It was awkward at first for me to have real butter, real salad dressing and chicken thighs and legs with the skin on if I wanted. But I have to tell you, these were welcomed changes!

Wishing you lots of success with Atkins and welcome to

                      Welcome Alexanderia!

Nuts can trip me up sometimes, as well. As you move on to OWL and approach Rung 3 (nuts), you might want to consider different strategies for being able to enjoy some nuts without overindulging in them.

Two things I do are (1) weigh my portion and put it into a separate bag, since I have found myself eating more than an ounce when it's just me and the open can; and (2) eat shelled nuts when I can (peanuts, mainly), so it takes me longer to eat my one ounce portion.

Adding to Shrew's amazing ideas, consider drinking your nuts.

Unsweetened almond milk is incredibly low-carb, and while thinner, I actually prefer it to regular milk. At a fraction of the carb count, it's amazeballs. It's also perfection for folks who have a lactose intolerance and miss their milk.

When I do nuts, I go with almonds. I toss them in olive oil and coat them with something hot like cayenne pepper, redneck pepper, jalapeno powder, hot hungarian paprika, or even some Dave's Insanity sauce. I bake them for 12 minutes at 450 to crisp them and make the coating stick. Then I make small portions. Having them be crazy hot really limits the amount you eat, and helps with the water intake.

Almonds and peanuts are better choose as these are less fat than most. Chinatown tends to have peanuts in all variety of dishes with vegetables. Yummy!
