  • 2nd time around for me too

    Hello all,

I was on Atkins for a couple of months in 06 and lost 22 pounds, getting down to 178 lbs, but gained it all back and then some. I restarted induction last week (Dec 29th) to avoid the jinx of New Years at an all-time high if 226 lbs and am now at 220.

At 5'7" I am just too big to be comfortable and an upcoming trip to Mexico motivated me to go back on Atkins. Not that I mind this way of eating, although I do miss a few things.

My goal weight is 165 lbs, that's quite a ways to go!

Best wishes to all of you.

    Welcome, Suki!

Did you progress through all the phases of Atkins last time?

    What things do you miss?

Re: 2nd time around for me too

        Thanks LIv and Georgiana,

I appreciate the welcome. Last time I was on Atkins was as part of a community wide diet, and I practised induction five days a week and then cheated on weekends when I went home to my husband. At that time I was living here during the week for a new job and I was allowed to join a large Canada Health sponsored project which offered support and medical observation for first nations people to follow a traditional protein based diet. The aim was to address rampant diabetes rates in the first nations people, which is caused by diet. Many people lost significant weight and were able to reduce or eliminate the need to take medication. They used Atkins as a model.

I'm not first nations but in the cooperative spirit of this community, anyone on this little island was invited to join. Unfortunately I didn't follow through with the diet, becoming completely derailed when I took a vacation to Costa Rica with friends. Most of us who lost weight in that project have gained it back but some people have changed their lives and maintained the healthier weight and eating habits. Since then, other island wide health initiatives have come along. Right now we're supposed to be trying to collectively 'walk across Canada' - I must pick up a pedometer.

As I mentioned, I like the induction diet for the most part but I'll admit that I miss bread. Good bread. Luckily we don't have a bakery here. I also miss beer, but luckily my husband has switched to a brand that I don't like. Icky Caribou beer.

Other than that, it's more a matter of organisation for me. I have an all day retreat to attend tomorrow and it's a small group. It's going to stick out that I'm not eating muffins at the break or the chili and toast at lunch. I can't leave the facility either. I could bring a couple of hard boiled eggs, but I hate to draw so much attention to myself.....

Thanks again for being so welcoming.

        Suki

Atkins isn't a 5 day a week, eat whatever you want on weekends "diet"...it's a 7 day a week way of eating for a lifetime. Have you read the 2002 Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution book? It's the book we follow on this site.

Once you go through a 2 week induction you need time to go through the Rungs, adding foods back in order of the rungs, slowly. That way you'll find the foods that you can eat without incident and those that give you problems.

Make sure you drink a minumum of 64 ounces pure water daily (nothing added), exercise and take a multivitamin without iron.

          Good luck to you.

            Hi Carole,

Yes I've read the book and am well aware that the WOE does not support the 5 days on and weekends off that I practised 4 years ago. That's why I described it as 'cheating'. We're not all perfect unfortunately and that's how it was for me then - even if I knew better. I was asked for a little background and I regret my candor now. Kind of asked for it, didn't I?

Thanks for the good wishes and all the best to you.

Is that the project with the Namgis first nations. I have seen a documentary about that and it was so interesting.

Certainly glad that you decided to come back. You know it works.

I wasn't trying to make you feel bad, I was stating the fact that Atkins isn't a 5 day on 2 day off type of diet -- there are those types of diets of there so I didn't want anyone new who may have been reading to think it was acceptable.

You said you know it wasn't the right way to follow the plan, I really hope you follow it correctly this time, go through all the phases of the plan and make your goal. Good luck!
