  • im making myself sick

    I have done soooo many different diets including atkins. And ironically they all helped me lose weight, which seems to screw my head up even more. My problem is this.....I fight this crazy battle within myself about the healthiest way to lose weight. My mother is an avid weight watchers goer. So she is always wanting me to go with her to those meetings. And the problem starts there. Ill go and decide i will do that with her, and then my mind starts getting all screwed up because all I think about is how many carbs all the food that im eating has in it. So I stop doing WW!!! And it pretty much works that way with all the diets i try. So here is my question....if Atkins consumes my mind, and I know it works, why don't i just stick with this and not all that other crap? I feel good, sleep good, look good and eat good when I'm on Atkins, so why do I waste my time on all that other crap? I need someone to help me, motivate me, and help me to stop making such bad choices. Help me, I'm desperate!!!!!!

    You'll have to figure that part out!

    Sadly, you're the only one that can motivate you!

    What exactly do you need help with as it relates to Atkins?

    That's something we all can help you with.

      You know Atkins is healthy, right?

      Debating which is the "healthiest" way to lose weight is a waste of time. You need to choose the "diet" that you believe can be your way of eating for life.

      My mother is an avid weight watchers goer.
      Is it working for her?

      Is she planning to do WW for life or is she just looking to lose weight?

      Ill go and decide i will do that with her
      What is it about those meeting that convinces you to do WW?

      Or is it just the fact that you could "diet" with your mother?

        hi hmf,

        I know how you feel. Quite often I seem to really struggle with the WOL and want to try other plans (normally low glycemic diets). I end up getting it a right state going back and forth between the two and reading diet books and conflicting advice until I want to scream! Often when I really think about it it is because I am craving something not legal or because I haven't really 100% got my head around the fact that it is healthy - like Georgiana said.

        To address these- you need a clean induction to break cravings and for the second you need to get really informed about Atkins - how it works, why it works, and why it is healthy. A great place to start is to re-read DANDR, though there are lots of other great things out there like Gary Taubes books (can find cheapish online). Or these links:

        To be informed about this WOL is key for me.

          It looks to me as if you don't have a "diet" issue...more like a "mommy" issue.

          I'm sure your mom loves you and wants what's best for you. The tricky part is when what's best for you and what's best for her isn't similar (or sometimes even compatible!). If your mother in unwilling to accept that you prefer a different lifestyle*, and you have difficulty defending your lifestyle choice, you will not achieve resolution or sanity anytime soon.

          Perhaps this is more an issue to take to a licensed family counselor than some random internet bulletin board - we're knowledgable about this way of life...not so much about family counseling!


          *Rest assured, Atkins is a lifestyle; if you treat it like a diet, you will almost certainly regain the weight!

            It's best to find what works for you and stick with it. When you find what you are happy with, regardless of what those around you are doing, you'll find success.

              thanks for all of your input!!! All of you, minus SHREW, are correct! I know what works and i do need to just re-read DANDR.

              SHREW, i did not come here for insults. You are a very Tacky person and should learn how to speak to people. I feel sorry for people who have to deal with you out there in person....especially if you talk to them like you just talk to me. I am insulted that you would even waste my time writing something like that. I have no "mommy" issues. All I said was that I went with her to ww. I Never once said she forced me too. I came here for advice on how to find my way back to eating right and for the support. Not for some idiot to tell me to go see a therapist..or whatever you said. So please, if you don't have something positive to say....DO NOT reply to my thread. Your just wasting your time!!!!

              And once again...thank you everyone else. I do know what I need to do. I just need to stop fighting with myself seeing how I know Atkins helps me health wise more than anything else!!

                I know what you mean, it is kinda like this in your head right.....if I could just stop thinking about food, when my next is meal, how many carbs & calories did I just eat, how long have I been on this diet and on and on....

                I wish for one day that food/weight would not control my thoughts too. But at the very least when you are doing the Atkins woe you can help you body if not your mind. Just skip the bread & pasta etc and don't even talk about it and really most people won't even notice you are doing any diet. Good luck.

                  *shrug* Deal with that, and you will win half the battle with your weight. Weight is neither gained nor lost in an emotional vacuum; unless you are able to withstand external pressure (regardless of source) when it comes to your choice of lifestyle, it will be tremendously difficult to lose the weight and maintain the loss. That applies to so many of us it's not even funny.

                    hmf,

                    I do the same thing, I have to analize everythting to death. Then right when I get my mind made up, I ask someone's opinion..that's always a mistake. I did very well with WW but now that I need to control my blood sugar I find Atkins works best for me now. But I still go to WW meetings while following Atkins, one.. to get weighed and be held accountable and two... to support a good friend. You have to do what is best for you... Good luck

                      Thanks everyone. Yea, like you Tissle...i think i need to stop asking everyones opinion also. And I think the ww meetings were neat because you saw actual people and talked to actual people. But, I know that the only real good way of eating for me is Atkins now. I just have to be a lot stronger and find this battle within myself. I am working on not thinking about food constantly. I guess it seems to be working because i have lost about 7 lbs in a week. But yes, it is an everyday battle within myself. I am gonna win this battle.
