  • Newbie intro + question on ketosis

    Hi everybody,

After a bad month and half of gorging on Christmas-related, carb-filled crap, I'm now getting back to getting this baby weight off of me already. My son was born almost exactly two years ago (Jan 22!) and I gained a lot more than I should have. The only reason I didn't get as big as I might have otherwise gotten was that I was in super-great shape just before I got pregnant with him. Since I plan to get pregnant again later this year (maybe) I want to get back into that kind of shape.

The first time I got in such great shape (for my '07 wedding), I did Weight Watchers and trained for a triathlon. Now, thanks to all the obsessive reading I've been doing lately, I've come firmly to believe in the evolutionary basis of a low (and even NO) carb diet for humans. After purchasing Jonny Bowden's recently released Living Low Carb, I decided to do Atkins because A)it's been around the longest and B) I know it works.

I couldn't find the 2002 version, but I have the 1999 version and it was definitely written by Atkins himself, so I'm assured it's a good version. If anyone would care to enlighten me otherwise, I'm happy to hear it.

    KETO-QUESTION!

I just started day one yesterday morning. At the end of the day, I used a CVS-brand ketostick and according to the package, I'm already in ketosis! Is that possible? I thought there was a delay of a day or two? I mean, I was eating carbs right up to the day before I started. Or is it possible because I have relatively little to lose that my body was able to make the switch faster?

P.S. I apologize in advance to anyone who feels I shouldn't be on a board like this because I am, technically, within the "normal" category of weight for my height. I know a few women over at the WW boards chewed me out because they thought I didn't belong there. I hope that doesn't happen here. My mother is morbidly obese and even after bariatric surgery, hasn't lost much weight. I *do* want to lose the weight I've gained from pregnancy and get fit, but I also want to prove to my mom that this might be the right diet option for her. Thank you for reading the novel if you've gotten this far. =)

    welcome to ADBB
the difference in the 19192 plan which is what you got in your 99 book is rule 5 changes from pick your one carb foods staying under 20 grams to eat nothing not on the acceptable foods lists.

the lists should be the same though.

The 2002 plan also changed from total grams of carbs to net carbs so subtract the fiber from your induction veggies as you count your induction daily total. the approved sweetner of choice also changes from Equal to SPlenda but the 3 servings a day limit remains.

and yep you can be spilling ketones on day one espically if you are consuming your fats as short or medium chain tryglycerides.

Re: Newbie intro + question on ketosis

      Thanks for the response 2big4mysize!

Good to know the ketosis is working. I'm still struggling with carb cravings at the moment, keeping the faith that they'll go away soon. I have a strong suspicion that the stevia and the Splenda in the Diet Coke are partially to blame for that.

I have no clue whether my foods contain short or medium triglycerides, however here is my menu for yesterday and so far today:

      Day 1 Induction diet

      3 medium-boiled eggs
      2 cups decaf w/ 2 tbsp cream + 2 scoops stevia

1 can tuna mixed with 3 tbsp mayo (0 carbs on label)

1.75 oz aged cheddar (0 carbs on label for 1 oz)

1 drumstick and 1 breast meat with skin from store-bought rotisserie chicken (carb count unavailable, assumed to be low or 0...no sweet sauce on chicken, just herbs)

65 gm salad greens with 2-3 tbsp homemade blue cheese dressing (dijon, Bragg's apple cider vinegar, crumbled blue cheese, olive oil)

      Diet Coke with Splenda

      2-3 glasses of water

8-9 pork rinds with ranch dip (full-fat, 0 carb sour cream--Daisy brand, mixed with packet of Hidden Valley Ranch dip mix, 1 carb per packet?)
      -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

      Day 2
      3 m.b.eggs
2 oz smoked salmon (rough count)
      2 cups decaf w/ 2 tbsp cream + 2 scoops stevia

      2 oz 0 carb sausage

2 tbs ranch dip w/3-4 pork rinds

Re: Newbie intro + question on ketosis

Your food choices look pretty good but do know that store bought rotisseries chickens usually have sugars in the marinades they use on them prior to roasting. Also your water consumption is WAY LOW and that will slow down your losses considerably. Try to get in half your body weight in ounces of pure water daily. So if you weigh 180 then 90 ounces of water a day. Welcome to ADBB

Are you counting the carbs in these?

            2 cups decaf w/ 2 tbsp cream + 2 scoops stevia
            What about these?

            mayo (0 carbs on label)
Mayo does not have 0 carbs though, regardless of what the label says. If the carbs are below 0.5 g per serving, American labels will normally round them to 0.

You can check the USDA database for carb counts: http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/foodcomp/search/

1.75 oz aged cheddar (0 carbs on label for 1 oz)
Again, the carbs are not zero.

1 drumstick and 1 breast meat with skin from store-bought rotisserie chicken (carb count unavailable, assumed to be low or 0...no sweet sauce on chicken, just herbs)
Did you read the list of ingredients?

            65 gm salad greens
Is this all for your vegetables? It's not enough.

            2-3 glasses of water
Is this all the water you're drinking?

            0 carb sour cream--Daisy brand
Sour cream is not zero carbs.

            Day 2
            3 m.b.eggs
2 oz smoked salmon (rough count)
            2 cups decaf w/ 2 tbsp cream + 2 scoops stevia

            2 oz 0 carb sausage

2 tbs ranch dip w/3-4 pork rinds
I'm assuming this is not a complete day, so it's difficult to comment on it... but check the ingredients in sausage. The carbs are not zero.

I should also point out that the advice you'll receive at ADBB is based on the 2002 edition of DANDR.

                  Welcome to the Atkins Board.

To get started, make sure you read the book - it will give you the knowledge you need to get to your goal. If you can’t find a copy locally of the 2002 Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution (DANDR) check online at www.half.com or www.amazon.com – I got a “used” copy recently for less than $5.00 including shipping not long ago.

Eat only foods listed on the acceptable food list http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...induction.html (What foods can be eaten on Induction?) make sure you eat a variety of foods and vegetables and count all “net carbs”. Plan your meals for a few days so you have everything in your home and you won’t be tempted to eat something not allowed. Check Linda's recipe site it will help keep you from eating the same thing over and over --
                  http://www.genaw.com/lowcarb/menus.html.

Exercise, take a non-iron multivitamin and drink a minimum 64 ounces of pure water (nothing added), daily. Start a journal, it's a great place to get everything out in the open, be accountable to yourself - you'll also meet some great people there! http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...journal-chats/. There’s something for everyone here!

If you need anything we’re here to help you!! Good luck to you!
