  • oh, hello (:

hi, my name is lola and i'm from the uk.
    i'm 19, average height (5"6) and i weigh 146lbs, which sucks.
    here are the main reasons why i am starting the atkins diet;
    1. because i'm not 16 anymore, and in no fear of blowing away on a windy day.
    2. because i appear to have stayed in this age 16 mindframe and keep buying clothes that are too small for me, not on purpose, but i'm sure Freud would disagree.
    3. because i told my boyfriend that i wanted to lose some weight and he said "oh no don't - i don't like thin girls"
    4. sorry, ex-boyfriend.
    5. because i am slowly but surely becoming the biggest girl in my group of friends. this point actually isn't too bad because all of my friends are very slight, petite girls. i'm just greedy and have ballooned since i started university.
    6. and finally, because, my goddamn housemate is also on a diet and i don't want her to win.

so, i'm really excited about this. i've got my notebook and all my food sorted. let's just hope nobody invites me out for a meal in the near future (:

    Re: oh, hello (:

    Welcome to the Atkins Board.

Atkins isn't a diet you win or lose - it's a lifestyle you follow over your life. How much are you planning to loose?

To get started, make sure you read the book - it will give you the knowledge you need to get to your goal. If you can’t find a copy locally of the 2002 Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution (DANDR) check online at www.half.com or www.amazon.com – I got a “used” copy recently for less than $5.00 including shipping not long ago.

Eat only foods listed on the acceptable food list http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...induction.html (What foods can be eaten on Induction?) make sure you eat a variety of foods and vegetables and count all “net carbs”. Plan your meals for a few days so you have everything in your home and you won’t be tempted to eat something not allowed. Check Linda's recipe site it will help keep you from eating the same thing over and over --
    http://www.genaw.com/lowcarb/menus.html.

Exercise, take a non-iron multivitamin and drink a minimum 64 ounces of pure water (nothing added), daily and use no more than 3 servings of sweetner a day.

Start a journal, it's a great place to get everything out in the open, be accountable to yourself - you'll also meet some great people there! http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...journal-chats/. If you need anything we’re here to help you!! Good luck to you!

Hello Lola, welcome to ADBB. You need to make you happy and healthy and Atkins will do that for you if you stick with it for life. Since you do not have a lot to lose I suggest moving on to Ongoing Weight Loss after your Induction.

        Welcome!

        >>let's just hope nobody invites me out for a meal in the near future>>

You can certainly eat out and "do" Atkins.

        You just have to plan!

If you are hoping to get down to the weight you were at 16, you will likely need to rethink that. Even though you might have stayed the same height, things such as your bone mass likely increased. Your muscle mass might have increased, too.

my goddamn housemate is also on a diet and i don't want her to win
You'd be better off in the long term if you didn't view this as a race between you and your housemate. Making a race out of weight loss means looking for a quick fix. In a race, the aim is being as fast as possible. However, when one follows Atkins, the aim should not be losing weight as fast as possible, but taking the time to learn healthy eating habits that will help one maintain one's weight once at goal.

To understand Atkins, you will need a copy of Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution (2002). Since you are in the UK, this is the cover you're looking for:

Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution: The No-hunger, Luxurious Weight Loss Plan That Really Works!: Amazon.co.uk: Robert C. Atkins: Books

Do NOT get this one (it's the 1999 edition, not 2002):

Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution: Amazon.co.uk: Robert C. Atkins: Books

If you're looking to save some money, you should be able to find used copies of the book in charity shops.

                Re: oh, hello (:

Welcome aboard Lola... nice to have you with us.
I agree with Jill's advice that you move to the OWL (ongoing weight loss) phase pretty soon after induction as you don't have masses to lose. Don't be afraid of OWL as many seem to be... you still get to lose weight (sometimes even faster on the first rungs) and the extra food choices are very welcome. You need some time in OWL, before maintenance, to verify your reaction to certain foods. It can be a surprising journey up the OWL ladder.

                Happy losing!
