  • Hi, new and almost ready to start, couple questions

Just wanted to say hi. I've tried low carb in the past but never tried Atkins. I am currently on WW but looking for a change. Over the last few years I've lost about 70ish pounds. Originally around 240, now around 167. I can't seem to finish the journey and get to goal though instead I bounce around between 155 and 180. Time to find a good program that can take me the rest of the way and finish this journey for good.

DH and I are planning on starting on Monday. I chose Monday because that is my normal weigh in day and I want to keep that the same. Going today to buy the proper foods. I've read all the lists, FAQs etc the only thing I'm not sure on is the salad dressing and vitamin. Can anyone recommend an actual brand of dressing and vitamin I can buy at WM? Right now I use one source vitamins but they iron in them. I don't have much time to shop today so if I could get a few brand names to run in and buy that would help a lot.

I plan to take up jogging on the treadmill as my exercise. I use to jog quite a bit but tore up my knee last year and wound up in a brace for many months. Time to try it out I guess. I only drink water so I should be ok with that, I already drink more than the required amount.

Looking forward to getting to know everyone here.

Re: Hi, new and almost ready to start, couple questions

    Welcome to ADBB!

    >>Time to find a good program that can take me the rest of the way and finish this journey for good.>>

The "journey" isn't finished when one has lost the weight ... the lifetime journey of keeping it off just begins! Make sure you understand that Atkins is "for life" and not just to take you to a goal weight.

    >>I've read all the lists,>>

Are you also reading the book, Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution (2002)? The lists and FAQs are a good start, but not enough.

    >>Can anyone recommend an actual brand of dressing and vitamin I can buy at WM?>>

Well, I've always used Hidden Valley Ranch myself. Other people use other ones. You really just have to read the labels and the list of ingredients.

As to the vitamin, I use the generic senior multi that I can get either at Costco or at Sam's Club (there's no WM by us).

Yes I've read the book a couple of times over the years. Just never actually started on Atkins. I'm pretty familar with the program and the threads/links brushed me up on the things I had forgetten.

I understand it's for life I've already kept 70lbs off for several years so I do realize it's continued work. What I meant was ready to finish the weightloss journey and get on with my life maintaining. Sorry wasn't more clear.

I can't urge you enough to reread the book, rather than relying on what you've read over the years.

I still pick up my copy!

Re: Hi, new and almost ready to start, couple questions

I'll definitely dig mine out again and give it another read but for today I need to get my shopping done. I'm not an adventurous eater so I plan to stick to meat, cheese, eggs and salad for the majority of my induction.

I'll check out the centrum vitamins for a no iron one and see if I can just find a sugar free oil and vinegar dressing. In the past I've used Hidden valley ranch but see it's not technically on program for atkins so I'll skip it for induction unless I simply can't find a good one. Don't want to make my yet.

            Thanks

Ok it looks like the recommended book here is the 2002 version. Mine is slightly older then that so I bought the 2002 off Ebay for less then $5 shipped. Will give it a read when it comes in next week.

For salad dressing I love the Marie's brand that you find in the produce refrigerator section (the the salad mixes). I like the blue cheese and the ranch. Don't get the 'lite' one though. Even thought they say 0 carbs, I count them as 1 carb because they contain dairy. Both are super tasty, great with veggies as a dip or a dressing.

I can't name a brand of vitamins for you (I'm not in the States), but generally the senior's formula don't have iron (I use a men's 50+ "Multisure" brand). Should make it faster to find an iron-free one if you start with the mens or seniors formulas

Re: Hi, new and almost ready to start, couple questions

I buy Equate Mature Multivitamin at Walmart.

Hidden Valley Ranch is my "go to" dressing/dip for everything. I also take sour cream or mayonaise and stir in dill and make a good dip.

Make sure you eat the foods on the acceptable food list (2 cups of "salad" veggies and 1 cup from the "other" veggie list daily), exercise and drink a minimum of 64 ounce pure water (nothing added) daily. Check Linda's recipe site it will help keep you from eating the same thing over and over -- http://www.genaw.com/lowcarb/menus.html

                        Good luck to you.

Re: Hi, new and almost ready to start, couple questions

Thanks for the welcome and the info. I did find One A Day Women's 50+ advantage vitamins with no iron so I picked them up. In the dressing I found:

Newman's Own All Natural Olive Oil and Vinegar:

Olive Oil Blend (extra virgin olive oil, olive oil)
Vegetable Oil (soybean Oil and/or Canola oil)
                          Water
                          Red Wine Vinegar
                          Onion
                          Spices
                          Salt
                          Garlic Lemon Juice
                          Distilled Vinegar

I don't see any sugar or hidden sugars so should this be ok? It has 1carb per 2 tbsp of oil.

I also bought a bottle of Emerals Essence seasoning, says it's just various spices, no sugar on the ingredient list. Hopefully it's ok for induction too.

Oh I also was wondering about Mayo, I see it's suppose to be ok but it has sugar in it so not sure how it could be Induction friendly. Couldn't find any sugar free bacon in the store.

This one's fine, too. Make sure you are counting the carbs.

Most people are not affected by the small amount of sugar in mayo.

                              Duke's mayonnaise has no sugar.

You could also make your own.
