  • Hello from London!

Hello everyone. My name is Louise, I live in London and I think I want to lose about 50 lbs. Really happy to find this forum. Seems to be really hard to find anything positive about Atkins!

I've been a yo-yo-er all my life but have never even given Atkins a thought before until I read a book recently called "The Hungry Years" by William Leith, and it changed my opinion of Atkins. I'm feeling quite desperate about my weight at the moment so I'm ready for something completely different to anything I've done before.

I'm at the end of the first day of induction and whilst I'm not hungry I do feel strange, kind of 'empty'. I think I can do it though!

Looking forward to speaking to you all

    What did you eat today?

Are you reading Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution (2002)?

      Hi

I've read the book thoroughly yes!

      Today I had

b - cheese and mushroom omelette
l - prawn and mayonnaise salad, and few slices of chicken
d - roast chicken (about a quarter), broccoli, cauliflower

snacks - few chunks of cheese and 20 olives

my cheese totalled 100 grams for the day

      Do you think thats okay?

Do you know how many net carbs you had? How many from Induction vegetables?

Did you make the salad yourself?

How much water did you drink?

          Re: Hello from London!

I didn't count the carbs as such, I just kept to weight guidelines for the vegetables and cheese. I made the salad.

I've been drinking LOADS of water as I always do but definitely have noticed feeling thirstier today.

What's LOADS of water in a quantity?

Some people think one glass is loads ... and others think a gallon is loads!

            >>I didn't count the carbs as such,>>

My advise would be to do that ... it's most helpful when you get to OWL ... and the easiest time to start is at the beginning.

Probably about 2 litres. Does anyone actually think a glass is loads of water?
I think I will try to count the carbs it did bug me a little that I didn't know for sure how many I had eaten.

Yes ... if they don't want to drink it.

                Probably?

The minimum you need on Atkins is 2 litres ... more won't hurt.

If you have the British edition of the book, the "weight guidelines" for vegetables are wrong. Someone was smart (not) and tried to transform from cups of vegetables to grams, forgetting that a cup is a measure of volume and does not necessarily equal 8 oz of vegetables... since different vegetables have different densities.

I will try to count the carbs
This should help: FitDay - Free Weight Loss and Diet Journal

Also, on your labels, the carbs listed are net carbs. That's what we are counting on Atkins... and, during Induction, the limit is 20 per day.

FitDay, on the other hand, uses the American labeling system. So the carbohydrates it lists are total carbohydrates (net carbs + dietary fiber), and to find the net carbs you will need to do the math yourself and subtract dietary fiber from total carbohydrates.

Actually I just wanted to introduce myself here, not face an interrogation! J, I did not record the exact amount of millilitres of water I drank today. I know I usually drink 2 litres, have done for years, plus a few herbal teas, so I'm quite familiar with the quantities and satisfied that I have drunk enough water. Thank you for your advice.

Georgiana thank you for the tip about Fitday.

I run the water challenge here and YES many people think 8 ounces of water is IMPOSSIBLE to drink daily.....that they'll be up all night going to the bathroom and they HATE water.......the minimum water daily is 64 ounces which converts to about 1.89 litre.

You need to count your net carbs daily -- eat no more than 20 net carbs most of them coming from vegetables. Also, make sure you are getting enough fat into your diet daily to help keep you feeling full.

Try a program like www.fitday.com to track your food intake - I couldn't live without it because I plan my meals out a day or 2 in advance so I know what I'll be eating - that way I have no excuses because the food is here and I don't have to think about "what's for dinner".

Read the book so you know what you're doing -- then re-read it often, you'll be surprised the new things you'll find each time you read it.

Eat a variety of foods listed on the acceptable food list http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.com/forums/atkins-low-carb-dieting-faqs/6781-what-foods-can-eaten-induction.html. Make sure you eat a variety of foods and vegetables and count all “net carbs”. Plan your meals for a few days so you have everything in your home and you won’t be tempted to eat something not allowed. Check Linda's recipe site it will help keep you from eating the same thing over and over -- http://www.genaw.com/lowcarb/menus.html.

Exercise, take a non-iron multivitamin and drink a minimum 64 ounces of pure water (nothing added), daily. Start a journal, it's a great place to get everything out in the open, be accountable to yourself - you'll also meet some great people there! http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...journal-chats/. There’s something for everyone here!

If you need anything we’re here to help you!! Good luck to you!

I know what you mean about the empty feeling. I think we get use to keeping ourselves full we forget what it's like to not feel full. You'll get use to it after a day or two and like the empty feeling much more than the too full feeling.

It's sounds like you were off to a good start (hoping you are still sticking to it). Good luck and stick around, there is a lot of support here.
