    Hi All-

    I am finishing up my 3rd day of induction- the headaches started yesterday and tonight I started with the nausea and leg cramps. Blech. Hard to believe that something that's supposed to be good for me leaves me feeling so cruddy.

    I have been reading the atkins.com site to learn the program.

    I think I need to up my veggies- I am drinking 60+ oz of water a day- starting vitamins tonight I wasn't as hungry today as I was on days 1 and 2- here is a sample menu-

    egg whites with cheese and veggie sausage (now I think I wasn't supposed to eat this kindof sausage on induction) 5 nc
    atkins bar- 2 nc
    lunch- I was out and grabbed a burger with cheese and bacon .5 nc
    broccoli with alfredo sauce 2 nc
    big salad with spinach, ham, cheese, ranch, egg, avocado-5 nc
    atkins bar- 3 nc

    17.5 net carbs.

    I know my body is detoxing- I'm just looking for some reassurance that I'm doing alright so far.

    Seems like a great + supportive and active board. Looking forward to learning more

    The atkins.com is the commercial company that has teh right to use the Atkins logo. They promote bars and shakes a lot and have make a few minor changes to the programme (so that people can eat a lot of bars and shakes ) Here we follow the Atkins book form 2002 called the new diet revolution. So our recommendations are based on that book. We are not sure that what the company is doing is better for the people on the diet of for their own bottom line.

    Until you get the book you can learn about the Atkins diet revoution in our stickies in teh FAQ forum and the induction forum

    Your menu does reflect that you are doing the company version. We are a bit worred that using bars causes stalls in induction and suggest sticking to whole foods and introduce bars later on.

    You need to read all the ingredients and compare them to the list of allowed foods
    The veggie saucage is probably full of soy (like teh bars ) and should not be eaten on introduction. It is very healthy to eat the whole egg. perfect little ball of nutrition that one and no articial chemicals or soy.

    Lunch souned ok but I am almost sure that those commercial cheeses in fast food joints have a lot more carbs. Maybe as many as 3 depending on where you went.
    Alfredo sauce has flour in it and would be illegal.
    Salad sounds good. Make sure the ham is not cured with sugars and you are limited to half an avocado a day.

    Drink plenty of water.
    Looked pretty good. I would steer it towards cleaner less chemical loaded foods and make sure that you have 3 cups of veggies spread out over all meals of the day.

      I have to agree, those bars are not on the acceptable list that Dr Atkins wrote and approved of. I have seen hundreds of post from folks who have stalled their weight loss using them.

      Get the book, Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution and read it, it's a great read and works for us.

        That's good to know- and it makes a TON of sense. I checked our library and they only have the 1997 and 1999 versions. I'll have to look. I'll stash the bars until later, too. Thank you for the advice--

        I feel so crappy I can't imagine being able to actually prepare food- I hope this passes quickly.

        I do 1/2 and 1/2 with the egg whites because I have cholesterol issues. So I had whites for breakfast and a whole egg with the salad. I have my chol. checked often so I need to be aware of it- which is why I try to tend towards leaner meats and veggie protein. I definitely have some reading/learning to do- didn't know soy was an issue.

        I am probably asking this prematurely- and I AM going to check out the FAQs- but the alfredo has 4 g of net carbs in 1/4 cup- and I use about 2 teaspoons- but it's still a no, no? It's made with corn starch.

        This headache is a killer- just drank an extra 24 oz of water.

          Take a tylonol have some rest - it will pass.

          Did you know eggs lower cholesterol? I mean really They are just perfect

            i tried atkins a whole bunch of times but backed out cause i was feelin like crap..but if your on day 3 don't stop now!!..i bet by tomorrow you will feel better..i swear to you that once it passes you will have soo much more energy..good luck!!!

              Yep ... it's a no-no.

              Of course, it's easy enough to make your own!

              And ... you need the book.

                Don't sabotage yourself by guessing--get the book! Hand in there and you will be feeling better soon.

                  You shouldn't feel "like crap" on Atkins after the first few days, if you follow the program correctly. Have you seen your doctor?

                    Morning... today starts day 4... the motivating news is that the scale was down this morning.

                    But MAN... MY HEAD... I hate to sound like a whiner, but I don't know if I can take this. btw so far today I have eaten- egg scramble with american cheese, spinach and canadian bacon, 40 oz of water (trying to help the headache- and my mouth is so dry- it's only 11 am. And I just tried Linda's cheese crisps.

                    I have followed most of the links to the faqs and they are so helpful- thank you so much-- I also have ordered the book, but I feel like I am learning more already. Have you found there to be a big difference between to 1999 version and 2002?

                    Speaking of dry mouth/gross breath... is there any kind of sugar free gum/mints that are permitted during induction?

                      Yeah- I get that- still a drag though- you want improvements that you make- or I do- to feel better instead of worse.

                      I hope this passes quickly- how long does the headache/nausea typically last? If there is a typical...?

                        Often, a few days.

                        How many calories are you consuming?

                        Are over half of your net carbs coming from vegetables?

                        Are you spreading your net carbs throughout the day?

                        Drinking more water sometimes helps.

                        If there is a typical...?
                        I wouldn't call it "typical"... but many people do experience a headache.

                          I just started using Fitday to help track- I don't know how many calories I was eating- I think I am on track today. Spreading out my carbs hasn't been a problem- and I am looking more closely at the veggies to make sure +1/2 carbs are coming from them.

                          About fitday- the carb calculations aren't net, right? so I deduct the fiber from them to calculate it?


                          I am drinking more water today- 48 oz already. I was already caffeine free, so it's not a caffeine thing.

                              I've tried restricted carb diets in the past and they have always triggered severe headaches and migraines. This is my first time following the 2002 Atkins plan and I am happy to say I am on day 5 and feeling awesome. Had a slight headache on day 1, took some excederine (only thing that stops it from becoming a migraine) and not a one since.

                              I'm no Dr. but from my past experiences I would say your headaches were triggered because you weren't following this particular plan exactly. You were adding things in that shouldn't be etc. Everyones triggers are different but your experience sounds just like my past problems.

                              Maybe now that you are on target with your foods you will get some relief. Don't be afraid to take something for your headache, no reason to suffer until you adjust.
