  • I'm new, and ready to start! But scared...

Hi, everyone! I'm a sophomore in college who was recently told that I have diabetes. My medication is pending ( I don't get that...) So I guess I'm on my own. After finding out the hard way that I can no longer eat food from the college cafeteria, because even the veggies have some sugar and preservatives in them, Guess I'll have to go to the grocery store and spend some financial aid money.

This is gonna be tough, and I'm scared and do feel doubt and anxiety, but I'm not gonna take my diabetes situation lying down. Gotta do something, right?! Any tips for diabetics would be greatly appreciated, and hope to stick around!

Oh, BTW I've read articles about diabetics that said that it's bad for us to eat meat. Anything I can substitute meat for before I continue Atkins?

    Type 1 or Type 2?

    >>I've read articles about diabetics that said that it's bad for us to eat meat.>>

    Huh?

Can you cite some references for that?

In all the years of doing Atkins support, and reading tons of diabetic messages, this is the first time I've heard that!

Are you reading Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution (2002)? You might also want to read Dr. Atkins Diabetic Revolution.

If you've going to be taking meds, you will need to work with your doctor quite closely.

Check out the 'Diabetes and Low carb living' thread in the Atkins For Health forum here on the board. We have a lot of diabetics and I'm sure they can answer your questions.

And good for you for not 'taking this lying down'!

Don't be scared about Atkins...it is actually pretty easy once you get the hang of it. It takes some time & effort at first, figuring out what you can & can't eat and what you like/what works for you.

That meat thing sounds strange to me too - check out the forum that Nyna suggested, I'm sure you'll get great information from people who have experience with diabetes & Atkins.

I think I would speak to my Dr about the meat. Sadly we have many diabetics in the family and none have ever been told not to eat meat.

I will definitely talk to the clinic (we don't have actual "Doctors" but they do Diabetes work and stuff). Definitely, whenever they decide to answer the phone...

I myself was confused on the meat thing. Then again some of the sources seemed biased but I'll definitely double check. And I already bought the Atkins New Diet Revolution 2002, because I was afraid to try it. I don't know how my mind works that way but whatever. Thanks for the warm welcome and hope to see you guys around.

Have you gotten your testing supplies? I wouldn't automatically rule out the college cafeteria until I'd done some pre-meal and post-meal testing while selecting the "best of the worst" (the veggies, any unbreaded protein, salad, etc.) to eat. If you were given postprandial targets and you find that you can't meet the targets while selecting the lowest-carb choices, fine. But until you test, you can't really say for sure.

I am a Type 2 diabetic and have NEVER heard I should not be eating meat .... this eating plan has been the best thing that I've ever done - my A1C has gone from 10.3 to right at 5 within a few months. My cholesterol numbers have gone into the perfect area after 5 years -- all while eating protein AND fat.

Make sure you didn't misunderstand what you were told and if they do say you aren't suppose to eat meat go to another doctor and ask for a 2nd opinion. There are plenty of us here who are diabetic and eat meat.

Don't be afraid of diabetes, get it in your mind that you can overcome by making yourself healthy.

Re: I'm new, and ready to start! But scared...

Thanks for the encouragement. I have the Atkins book now and have read up to ch. 11. I can't seem to grasp why Saturated fat does not seem to be as bad as I've always been taught. Also, is Canola oil really good for you? How bout Coconut?
(This YT video got me thinking about it, but I don't know if I can post links to Youtube videos. Yes I question everything. )
Again, something I don't understand. Perhaps some Atkins veterans (who were diabetic) could shed some light on that. Started today with half an avocado, and half a cucumber and going to to the store to pick up some more veggies and meats.

I wanted to buy some ground beef but didn't see anything that indicated that there were, or were not, any preservatives so I didn't get it. Any tips for a dieter on a tight budget?

Again, thanks for the warm welcome! I'll try to post the rest of my questions in separate topics, but then there'd be 50 new topics a day lol.

You can post links to youtube if you like.

Why saturated fat is not bad - the scientists have not really been saying that but the nutritionists have and they are the ones that have dominated official recommendations and for the most part they have become so stuck in their own weird notion that they have trouble backing down.
Georgiana just posted a link to another research paper coming out stating that saturated fat did not cause heart disease:

So eating fat is not bad - it is actually the sugars we eat that helps cause the problems.
Oils are good as long as they are not hydrogenated.
If you have questions about diabetes specifically maybe try to post in the diabetes forum. More people may see it there.

Ground beef is typically fine. Check the ingredients though. If it's just meat, it's okay.
