  • Two weeks & no ketosis!

Just joined the forum and instead of bailing on the whole process, decided I need to learn more. Realized with rereading the books that I have been eating too much protein and not enough fat. Am also probably metabolically resistant due to Candida.

Been eating cheese sticks but discontinued today. What are others doing to increase fat so the body starts burning it? Can I use coconut oil to up my fat intake?

Will start on decaf coffee tomorrow, and be extremely strict on my carb counting...will increase my fat intake (seems kinda hard to think of ways to get fat into my routine--weird) and hopefully will start to see my ketostix change color.

    Any other suggestions?

Yes you can use coconut oil -- also avocados are a good source of good fat - you're allowed 1/2 an avocado daily.

Have you checked this thread: Candida (Yeast) - Atkins Diet - you'll get a lot of help there to figure out if you do have Candida or not.

Make sure you are counting net carbs. The closer to 20 net carbs daily I was in induction the more I lost.....most of your carbs should come from vegetables so make sure you are getting them in daily.

    Good luck

Oil, butter, avocado, fattier cuts of meat...

seems kinda hard to think of ways to get fat into my routine
If you want to post a complete menu, with amounts and net carbs for all foods, we might be able to make some suggestions.

hopefully will start to see my ketostix change color
You can be in ketosis without changing the color of the sticks.

Or you could change the color but not follow the plan correctly or lose weight.

Thanks for your replies! Where does it tell us how many grams of fat we're supposed to take in in a day--100? I've upped my supplements (suggested in Atkins book re metabolic resistance) and my fat intake and water--

Have a great week. Thans again for the support.

There's no set amount of fat you should have.

At least during Induction, approximately 65% of your calories should come from fat. But don't obsess about this number. If it's 72% one day and 62% the next... that's fine.

Make sure you are not undereating calories... as that will slow down your metabolism and interfere with weight loss.

Re: Two weeks & no ketosis!

Long time dieters are usually reluctant to begin upping fat in their food plans. I know having flunked Diet Workshop, Weight Watchers, Nutrisystem and a myriad of other plans, I was skeptical about Atkins. But I read and learned the science behind it and jumped off the "fat is bad" cliff.

I upped my fat by using mayonaise on burgers, eating egg salad with mayo, ranch dressing with wings, butter on veggies, olive oil in cooking stir frys. I did eat cheese, but found it to impede my weight loss so I cut back on it in early Atkins.

So while consuming fat may be counter intuitive, try it. It does work.

When you are alone in your head, you are in a bad neighborhood.

I agree - butter & mayo are some of my favorite ways to add fat & flavour!!

Re: Two weeks & no ketosis!

I've used the sticks in the past for other plans but I didn't even bother buying them this time. If I'm not hungry/craving all the time and I am losing weight I'm in ketosis. I'm not going to obsess over a stick and wether it turns colors or not. Your body will tell you when it's in a happy spot. The sticks are so iffy, if they get too much moisture from their enviroment it can make them work wrong, if they are old they can be inaccurate, drink too much water it may not pick up your ketones etc.

2 big questions, have you been eating ONLY induction listed foods and have you been losing weight at all? Ok make that 3, have you been drinking all your water and taking your vitamin? Ok 4 LOL
