  • Brand New! Looking for Support

    Hi,

My name is Anna and I'm new to these forums but not entirely new to the Atkins way of life.

A few years back I started gaining weight very quickly. Also, I hadn't lost that last 25 lbs from my pregnancy. Within about a year I had gained 50 extra lbs while working out and watching what I ate. When I went to the dr. we discovered that I had a pretty significant thyroid condition.

Since, I have kept up with a moderately healthy lifestyle. I get lots of exercise and try to eat well. Also, I take medication to help regulate my thyroid. Though I have lost some weight this way... I have not lost nearly enough and my dr. suggested I use Atkins.

About a month and a half ago I began the Atkins diet... sort of. I just reviewed the list of things that I could and could not eat and then did it... but without practicing moderation. I LOVE coffee and continued to drink lots of coffee with heavy creamer and Stevia. Also, I continued to snack on cheese, without counting any of the carbs in it. I also eat quite a few leafy green vegetables and continued to do so without counting.

So, I have actually lost quite a bit of weight. I don't have a scale, but my guess is that I've lost between 15 and 20 lbs. I am able to fit into clothes that I haven't worn in years. That said, I still have about 40 lbs that need to go.

Last night I bought ketostix and learned that I'm not in ketosis. So, I am starting over, in phase one... monitoring things closely and giving up those things that I love... like coffee.

    Welcome Anna
Glad you are figuring things out. Wonderful that low carb is working for you.
I don't think you have to be in ketosis. The most important thing is to eat healthy and lose the weight you want to eat. Some people can never turn those ketpstix. I never bothered buying them.

      Welcome to ADBB!

As Liv wrote, the color on the sticks is not important. You could be in ketosis even if by following Atkins the wrong way.

Measuring is important... especially for those times when you'll need to troubleshoot.

Are you reading Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution (2002)?

        Welcome to ADBB Anna

Congratulations on your success so far. I agree (of course) with Liv and G that you really didn't need to spend the $$'s on Ketostix. Mine never did change, but between the lack of appetitie, and the odor of my urine, I KNOW it's working . Besides, you say you think you've lost around 15-20 pounds in 1-1/2 months? That's Wonderful .

IMHO, I would cut to induction for just a couple of days, then continue along and go through the rungs of OWL, if for no other reason than to learn what foods you may be sensitive to (ie: I CAN'T have cream cheese w/Splenda [huge cravings], but cream cheese, pumpkin and Splenda is fine). By tracking your foods you will learn this.

Best wishes on your continued journey, and give that insightful Doctor you have a Atta boy/girl from me.

I never changed the sticks any color and have lost 35 pounds so don't go by the color. Eat the correct foods, drink plenty of water - watch the amount of coffee you are drinking....water is more important.

There is a group here that started a thread about thyroid problems....you may find some help there also. Thyroid - Atkins Diet

            Good luck
