Re: New to low carb dieting
Welcome to ADBB!
Are you reading Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution (2002)?
>>so far this week it's just not showing the progress I wanted it to.>>
Having "expecatations" is self-defeating ... and generally disappointing.
I really wanted to be taller.
If you do Atkins by the book and commit to this as a lifetime eating plan, you will have success ... maybe not in the timeframe you want (who of us didn't want to wake up one morning and have all the weight gone?) but you can achieve it.
>>ticking to 20 and sometimes less than that. >>
It's "net" carbs ... and how much less are you having?
Undereating doesn't work on Atkins.
If you want to post a typical day's menu, with quantities and net carbs we can take a look.
How much water are you drinking?J.

Re: New to low carb dieting
>>I drink about 45oz of water a day>>
That's not even the minimum required by Atkins. You need a minimum of 64 ounces ... and most find that drinking 1/2 their current body weight in ounces of water works best.
You would need at least 100 ounces.
>>I look up everything i want on the Atkins website to see if it's acceptable.>>
The information there is incorrect though.
You really need to check the book ... or a reliable list that matches the book:
>>I am doing EXACTLY what the book/website says to do.>>
Actually, you're not ... since you're not drinking enough water.
If you want to post a typical day's menu, with quantities and net carbs we can take a look.J.

Re: New to low carb dieting
>>How is the website wrong? Isn't it a website based on HIS rules and books?>>
Well, it's wrong because the list of Induction foods isn't correct. Items are missing, and there's some items that aren't "clear" ... such as "peas".
Actually, the website now is based on what the marketing department of ANI thinks Atkins is.
>>I know what net carbs are, I am pretty intelligent. I also know how to count, and I know that i'm not going over...OR undereating.>>
Understood.
>>Also I have had family members that did Atkins and drank NO water and still lost weight.>>
Since drinking a minimum of 64 ounces of water is a Rule ... #11, I would say they weren't doing Atkins.
>>Not once in the book does it say Atkins won't work unless you have 64oz of water a day.>>
Again, see Rule #11 of Induction.
>>. Maybe there's another Atkins board with more support.>>
There's lots of places that will tell you what you want to hear ... and pat you on the back for doing things wrong!
Good luck with your journey.J.

Re: New to low carb dieting
I know you want encouragement... but don't you think helping you get things right is what you actually need?Originally posted by KizaWeeI needed positive encouragement
Don't you think that would help you more?
I mean, you wrote you are "doing EXACTLY what the book/website says to do"... but that's not the case if you are drinking 45 oz of water per day.
Drinking at least 64 oz of water is part of the Atkins plan... regardless of what other members of your family did.
And it's not only about losing weight. It's about being healthy, too. Water will help with that.
What in what was posted in this thread made you feel "stupid and incompetent"?not to be made to feel stupid and incompetent
The fact that someone pointed out that you are not drinking enough water?
Or that someone suggested that you might want to post a menu?
We're here to help... if you want help. If not, you can just tell us and we won't be offering advice... and no offense taken, really.
If you only want encouragement, then I'm sure there are many ADBB members who will give you that.
What about starting a journal? I'm sure you'll make a lot of friends there.

Re: New to low carb dieting
I'm new to the diet and the site too KizaWee and I find all of this extremely confusing and the site/forums are very hard for me to use, it seems too "busy" for me.
But, we want to lose weight and maybe the very best way to accomplish that goal is to turn to those who have been on this diet and have been successful. They are the ones who know what we should/should not be doing. Even if you get your feelings hurt, better maybe to go with hurt feelings and be a lot smaller this time next year than to leave and quite possibly weigh as much or even more.
Stick it out with me, we will muddle through somehow, ok?
I didn't even buy a book, my neighbor just tells me what to eat every day - I'm scared of what some will say about THAT *LOL* - it really is stupid of me to attempt this without reading how to do it.

Re: New to low carb dieting
Thank you for being sweet Maxima...i was waiting for ONE sweet person.
But I can guarantee that I won't be gaining weight because of these bitter people. I lost 31lbs before I met them...and I'll lose a lot more after having had the unfortunate mistake of meeting them. Other people do not have the power to have negative influence on my life. God is in control of ALL things.

I am new here, too, and active in ministry, so I agree with you that God is in control. But he made you a free moral agent, so you make the choices for your life and live with them. I surely missed where anyone was mean or unsweet in this thread. People are trying to help, and you should lose the offense that you took from what was said (Ps. 119:165). I think you need to not take it as attacks but understand that this forum is here to help. That is how I look at it.
Jesus is the center of my life, and I made the food and exercise (or lack thereof) choices that got me into me present obese condition. But I am thankful for this wonderful resource and a place where others that are fighting or have fought the same battle I am fighting and have been successful can help to get me results. Please don't leave and please don't be offended. These people are only trying to help.
Take care and do good! \o/
To others that may read this, I don't intend to offend you with Christian references, but she talked about God being in control and I wanted to address her in that context. Thanks for understanding.

There are plenty of "sweet" people here -- it's too bad you don't feel that there are. You were given advise on how to follow the plan according to the 2002 edition of Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution - it's not what the Atkins website says because they have changed the rules since the 2002 book came out. I started out there and decided THEY were too high and mightly for my taste and when I found this site I was welcomed much better. It's too bad you weren't.Carole_____________________May Water 130oz daily

Great post Keith48
im Christian too
and Kizawee i know its hard to take at first even when i mostly first came to the ADBB i told everyone this is what i did to lose weight i did do atkins but i mostly only ate broccoli, eggs, meat and then everyone reminded me how to do Atkins 100% correctly
anyways the people here are trying to help at first they sound harsh but really there just showing how to do the diet 100% properly so you have the best results and the only way to explain it like that is to be firm and it can sound harsh at first
try looking at it like this
correct the wise man and the wise man becomes wiser
thats a good way to improve because you want people to correct you then! and its silly to feel attacked when they are trying to help you
you can still have free will and voice your own personal preferences as long as you don't state that its the 100% by the book atkins diet unless it really is
also for example some of my personal preferences are i don't like eating too much fiber a little is ok but eating to much fiber hurts my gut (i cut mostly all the stems off my broccoli and just eat the top flower part) while other people like eating a fair bit of fiber
anyways i hope you don't leave ADBB because of this. i have learned many useful things here
