I started atkins diet on Jan. 4th I weighed in at 254, my goal weight is 185 and my current weight is 235. I went my first 3 weeks with out exercise of any kind and in that time I lost 17 lbs. This past week I started running in the morning and this week (4th week) I have only lost 2 more lbs. I haven't increased my carbs and I know muscle weighes more than fat but shouldn't the weight come off faster? Any comments or suggestions help. Thanks.

Re: New with exercise ?'s
First, great job and congratulations on your initial weight loss. Second, that is a common thing to lose a lot of weight in the first few weeks and slow down, especially if you changed your habits. Many times your body can withold water or hold onto fat if it feels threatened by the amount of weight loss. You may have a full week of two of no weight gain. I lost five pounds in my first week and then gain five pounds in my second week. The third and fourth week I lost 10 pouds.
After crying to this board and being patient, I learned that i was not eating enough healthy fats (through my use of fitday), not getting my carbs from the right places, had to increase my calories and started supplements. The supplements are not typical, but they really helped me with my low energy level. This whole thing is like working with a rubics cube, you have to keep switching things around until they work out just right for you and your body. Dr. Atkins gives us the final results of his studies in the DANDR book, but it took him thousands of patients and countless dedication to develop the diet to its current state. Look at thi long term and take the "valleys" as a challenge and not a flaiure. It will work out evetually. If you spend enough time her you will see people who have never lost weight and swear they are doing things the right way. They may be, but they haven't figured out there personal recipe. Keep posting for help, use fitday to calculate your calories and KEEP EXERCISING. This is as much a lifestyle change as it is a weight loss regime.
God Bless you and Good Luck!

Also it is absolutely normal that body takes a break - just keep working on being healthy and things will keep going
And when we start exercise we tend to hang on to some water to repair muscles so we may actually gain some temporary weight (I usually go up some after running

Re: New with exercise ?'s
BigDawg, was up! Man you sound just like me! My starting weight was 248, now I am 229 and my goal is 175, I am a runner as well. on 2008 I completed my first marathon and gained 25lbs doing it. Anyway- I dropped about 16lbs super fast and then gained a few and lost afew- the important thing is you are still loosing. Just hang in there, continue to be LC (inspite what runners tell you about carb loading) and you will reach your goal.
