  • Just started, have question

Glad to be here. I don't have any chit-chat, and I don't know what those who read this may want to know. I'm open to questions from any of you, and right now will only say what the reason is for me doing Atkins and being here on this board.

I read a really good article by Doctor Barry Groves. The name of the article is The Naive Vegetarian. It can be found at The Naive Vegetarian - Second Opinions, UK

After reading the referred to article and thinking it over a little, I remembered my brother-in-law talking about the Atkins Diet. From what my bro-in-law told me, I thought Atkins sounded like the best way to try this new--to me--way of eating. It's actually the oldest diet in history.

I'm convinced that Atkins is the way to go, and have read his book and started eating accordingly. I'm happy with it.

My question is this: I want to ask a pretty technical question, and don't know where on this site to go to ask it. Does anyone know?

That's all I have to say, but will respond to anything from anyone.

        Re: Just started, have question

Yes, I can give a hint or maybe more than just a hint. I just didn't want to start a question that was asked in the wrong environment.

I am a coffee addict. Naturally, as an addict I am trying to find justification to continue the drug of my choice. So, I've been reading/researching scientific articles on the subject. The problem is that I have found so wide a divergence of opinion from qualified scientists that I'm now more confused than I was to start with.

I've already read Dr. Atkins' statements on coffee, and I do not doubt them. However, from what I read there may be a few exceptions to who may benefit or not benefit from drinking coffee. For example (and this is just one example, there are several): persons who may be harmed by a rise in cholesterol probably should not drink coffee that is not filtered through paper. But, if the coffee is filtered through a paper (or other as effective filter) then the elements within coffee (the oils) that cause a rise in cholesterol are filter out. That would seem to make the coffee OK for the cholesterol concerned person to drink.

There are apparently many other reasons for people to not drink coffee, I'm just giving this as one example of my confusion.

There is one main point of confusion for me, and I've just written to a research scientist about it. If he answers my query, and if he gives me the permission I've asked for, I will share it with all.

The main point of confusion for me has to do with insulin resistance and blood sugar levels. Dr. Atkins addressed this issue. There is no doubt that some people should stay away from coffee, but there are some for whom coffee is a great benefit.

        Thus spoke the addict.

        Thanks,

        Dale
