  • Trying to do this with my husband.

Hello - I'm in my mid 40's. I was always very slim and healthy until I was diagnosed with ovaraian cancer about seven years ago. I was put on hormone therapy and gained 63 lbs in just over three months, immediately after surgery. I only stayed on hrt for a year. I have never lost that weight, though I have tried very hard. My eating habits never changed, except that I actually eat less now and still the weight won't come off.

My husband recently went to the doctor. The doctor told my husband he had to try Atkins because he had very high blood sugar. If he is successful and can get his blood sugar down along with some weight off his middle (the rest of him is fantastically fit!!) he may be able to avoid medication. My gyn oncologist wants me to lose weight too. So, my husband and I are doing this as a team effort!

We started this diet yesterday. I have been semi successful on another diet. I did gain the weight back. This goes against every diet I have ever known, but I'm giving it my best shot.

I hope this forum helps me be successful, by way of information, and connect with people that can help us along the way.

      Hi,

My husband and I are doing this together too. It's nice to have the support but I make sure he knows I am doing this for me and even if he decides to go off, I'm not. I have to get healthy for me and I can't let anyone derail that.

He started with about 80-90lbs to lose. He's lost almost 20lbs since we started so he's on his way. Good luck to both of you.

Thank you for the welcome! We do have the book and I am trying to follow the induction very strictly. I am glad that I found this site. I hope that I can achieve my weight loss goals. Right now, to be honest, I'm really craving sweets and crunchy. I know it will get better.

          Robin,

Celery ... cucumbers help with the crunch.

The best thing to do with a sweet craving is to ignore it!

          Or eat something fatty.

Re: Trying to do this with my husband.

              Welcome --

Atkins goes against everything I've ever done also, BUT my diabetes is now considered "diet controlled' and I've lost and kept off 35 pounds and was never hungry and didn't eat anything that tasted like cardboard so give it a chance.

If you're hungry eat - chicken dipped in mayo, ham with cream cheese wrapped inside, celery with cream cheese, colored pepper slices dipped in ranch dressing, hard boiled or deviled eggs....all things you can have without "cheating".

Good luck to both of you.

On Induction, I'd reccomend going with something fatty. Spicey Buffalo Wings are tastey too. There's a recipe section here at ADBB.

Welcome to the both of you. Read the "sticky's". It'll keep you busy and is loaded with great information.

Re: Trying to do this with my husband.

Fantastic - My husband and I started Atkins 10 days ago. I started several diets (with my husband) since gaining 60 pounds and two children. He was certainly encouraging, but never really on the low-fat/low calorie band wagon. I abandoned each - success was virtually impossible without a committed support system.

Another couple in our circle of friends started Atkins at the beginning of the year. Together they've lost over 40 pounds. Two days after seeing how great they looked, my husband declared, "I'm starting Atkins." Yahoo!

I think we've finally found a diet that works for both of us. Together, we've lost 15 pounds and we're going strong.

I hope you both find the same. Good luck!!

Diet Reminder: It's a marathon, not a sprint. It took a long time to gain the weight, it'll take some time to loose it. Stay strong.

Re: Trying to do this with my husband.

Hello Everyone - Thank you for the crunchy suggestions and encouragement! I have found that deviled eggs are my friend. Something about them seems to solve a craving. I also have sugar free jello at night. Never been much on jello until now!!! My husband and I joined a gym in December. He has been going more than I have. I am trying to go three days a week, my goal is four. It isn't that I don't like going, it is the time. He goes in the evening and frankly sometimes I am just too tired. When I go, I use the eliptical for a mile, treadmill for .75 with interval jog, and a weight circuit.

My husband has lost 9 pounds and feels great. I was feeling very nauseated, but I feel pretty good the last few days. My personal goal is to drink more water at work.
