  • Oh...Hello, there!

    Hi All!

I'm happy to have stumbled upon your board. I found it by googling where to find Atkins Bake Mix..Which, after reading a few opinions, I'll avoid buying

This is my second time on Atkins, my first was five years ago when I dropped 20 lbs and reached a weight of 168lbs on a 5' 6 1/2" frame. I wasn’t a cook and if I couldn’t take it from its carton and put it in my mouth in 30 seconds, I wouldn’t bother with it. After a month on Atkins, I was sick of eating my quick, low variety foods and slipped back into a high-carb world. Stupid then, smarter now.

Unfortunately, I've gained a lot more weight over the last six years..I've also picked up a lot more nasty eating habits. I've tried other diets (lean cuisines, unprocessed foods only, and weight watchers), but in the end, I fall off the wagon. My heaviest weight was 244 pounds/size 18 (and I very well remember the day I said I'd never get over 160 lbs!)

I am 25 now and can see how the weight gain has effected my life; I am embarrassed to be in pictures, I am sick of hearing "if you just lost the weight, you could have any guy," and I buy my jeans online from the trendy clothing lines because they don’t carry my size in the store (I have too much pride to shop in the big girl stores: Lane Bryant=Lane Giant and Torrid+Horrid.) My self-esteem has plummeted (except for the few narcissistic moments when I still love my face.) At best, I didn't feel like a fat girl, but then I would see the pictures of me. My sleep pattern was something I knew was wrong, but I wasn’t sure why. I would sleep almost half the day, every day. On a day off, I could sleep ten hours, wake up and two hours later take a three-hour nap. On a working day, I could come home at 6, sleep until 9 and go to bed at 11. I had daily "food comas," you know the ones.. about a half hour after you eat, all you want to do is sleep?

I began Atkins mid-January after having an emergency cholesysectomy and weighed in at 234 lbs. At this point, I knew I could do Atkins without having to worry about gallstone attacks I suffered from a higher fat intake. I read the book, cleaned out the kitchen and started taking a daily multi-vitamin pack, flaxseed meal, flaxseed oil, and turmeric curcumin.

The pros: I have more energy then the last time I can remember. My skin quality has improved. The amount I sleep has been the biggest noticeable change: instead of 10 hours of rest, I wake up around 7 and hardly nap. When I do nap, it is for 10-20 minutes and not hours.

Con:I am down just four pounds, but I do know why!! I have had numerous times when I have cheated through out the day; other times, I did not follow induction and just stuck to low carb foods; finally, I ate a lot of sweets with sugar alcohol content, which I believe would burn off first instead of glucose or fat stores.

Browsing through this site and reading your comments have really inspired me to quit cheating and commit myself today. I am excited to lose the weight and let the skinny girl on the inside come out and play. Thank you to those who read all of my ramblings and thank you for inspiring me!

You have the right attitude and sometimes it takes a little while to get on the plan the way it is written but keep trying because you can do it. Remember that all those slip-ups are just not worth it!

            Welcome, Annie!

That's true for alcohols, not for sugar alcohols.

Most sugar alcohols affect, to a certain degree, one's blood sugar. It is also an individual thing.

You should definitely ditch the sweets... and not only those sweetened with sugar alcohols. Since you have a sweet tooth, avoiding sweeteners for a while (at least for the first two weeks) is best, imo.

I have had numerous times when I have cheated through out the day; other times, I did not follow induction and just stuck to low carb foods
            Do you know why?

It is a combination of things.. I started the diet before I finished the book and forgot about not eating nuts or any fruit on induction.. sometimes I lacked on prep and forgot to bring lunch to work and by the time lunch came around, I just said...agh forget it. When I started Atkins the first time, I lost weight so easily; I think it was 16 lbs after two weeks of induction. I figured if I kept to the idea of low carbing everything, I'd be ok...and because I didnt count carbs, they totalled more then I had planned. Its bad, lazy habits that bring me down, but I am confident this is the right WoE and no matter how many time I faulter, I will start again.

                Re: Oh...Hello, there!

Just remember, just eating low carb foods is not following Atkins....make your lunch the night before, makes extra and take it for lunch or have it later in the week for dinner...hopefully you have finished the book now and are ready to do a clean induction.

You say you lost weight so easily "the first time"....we all did - your body isn't the same as it was back then so don't compare what happened then and what is going on now -- just do a strict induction and see what happens.

                Good luck
