  • Finally, something that works!

    Hello all!
I am a 48 year old woman who has been carrying an extra 45 to 65 extra pounds for years.
I decided to do Atkins after watching some of Jorge Cruise's videos about the evils of sugar and receiving a free Atkins starter kit in the mail. I checked out Atkins' most recent book from the library and read it from cover to cover. I'm on my second read now. I laughed when I read the part about how you will know you are in ketosis when you realize it is an hour past lunchtime and you missed it. That exact thing happened to me!!!
    Now some history about me.
I am a lifetime member of Weight Watchers. I went there when I was in my twenties and had no problem losing weight consistently.
I have six children (all delivered via C-Section). I always gained about 35 pounds with each pregnancy and left some on afterward.
After my 5th baby, I did Glen Shamblin's Weigh Down Workshop (I was 35 then). It is an "only eat when you are physically hungry, and then only a little bit" diet. I lost quickly on that, 8 pounds the first week and 2 pounds a week afterward. I think it really screwed up my metabolism though.
I got pregnant again, and after that final baby, I was left with excess baggage again.
I tried WW again and lost some, but never all of it. I would be so faithful, but I still could not lose the weight. People would sit in the meetings receiving rewards for pounds lost and then they would share that they didn't even know how they did it because they certainly didn't follow the program very well. It was very disheartening.
I tried calorie counting -- not effective.
I was always trying something, but nothing would ever work. I blamed the starvation diet for ruining me. After all, I could always lose weight before that diet.
Now, I've completed the second week of induction and have lost 8 pounds so far. I feel so free. I don't eat much because I'm rarely hungry. I actually have to remember to eat. There are goodies all around me, but they don't tempt me. I'm simply not interested, and after finding something that works, why would I want to ruin it?

Hi and welcome! Isn't this Way of Eating wonderful?

Congrats on the 8 lb loss already!!

Do remember to eat and when you do, make sure you get in what you need (veggies, proteins, fat). And remember, you need to follow this for life, not just for the weight loss.

    Welcome to ADBB!
    Start date: 2/22/04 347/222/135 ~ 5'2"
    STAC Restart: 1/05/09

    Goal #1: 247 - 2nd 10% (59lbs, 247, also 100 lbs total loss) - Met 1/4/10!!!
    Goal #2: 241 - Halfway to goal! (106 lbs lost) - Met 2/21/10!!!

    Goal #3: 222 - 3rd 10% - Lowest Atkins weight

Congrats on your success here so far! Its funny how diets work huh? I always thought it was better to limit and limit calories, when that is the worst thing cuz your body holds on to every little thing it gets after awhile!! This is a great WOE, I hope to have success like you have on Induction (Im finishing up week one tomorrow)!!

I am not eating the kids leftovers or whilst I am cooking,I like the fact there are things I can and things I can't eat! I need this discipline or I just go off the rails! I eat 3 meals a day they fill me up I truly believe this works and look forward to hearing about your journey!!

Welcome to the board, houseful! And congrats on your loss!

I had the same experience with WW. The meetings were always more discouraging than helpful, unlike this board where you will find support from every direction. Just read the many forums and you will know what I mean.

              Welcome --

Get a copy of the 2002 Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution (DANDR) it's what we use as our guideline here on the board - unlike the Atkins Corp we don't agree that the bars and shakes (from your Atkins kit) are suitable for "all phases" - they aren't allowed on induction because of the ingredients - this board is not in business to make money, we are here to loose weight and help each other.

Eat foods listed on the acceptable food list http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.com/forums/atkins-low-carb-dieting-faqs/6781-what-foods-can-eaten-induction.html, eating a variety of foods and vegetables and count all “net carbs” (carb minus fiber equal net carbs). Keep track of your food totals for the day using a program like www.fitday.com to help you do that.

Plan your meals for a few days so you have everything legal in your home. Linda's recipe site is very helpful with delicious recipes - it will help keep you from eating the same thing over and over -- http://www.genaw.com/lowcarb/menus.html.

Exercise, take a non-iron multivitamin and drink a minimum 64 ounces of pure water (nothing added), daily. Many people find a journal a great place to get everything out in the open, be accountable to yourself and meeting great people – http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...journal-chats/.

If you need anything we’re here to help each other every step of the way! You'll do fine and I can't wait to see your success...good luck!
