  • Introducing myself

    Hi:
    1) Set a New Years goal to lose seventy pounds this year.
    2) Lost 17 in 1/10 abstaining from beer, combining foods properly and walking 30-45 minutes six days a week.
    3) Came down with a killer chest cold and stopped exercising and sleeping more to keep my immune system from tanking any further.
    4) Used the down time to read a lot on combining and came across Atkins.
    5) Just finished Day 7 of Induction today and, while I'm meeting the 20 Net Carb objective every day (assuming I'm measuring accurately), I'm really missing the chocolate protein shake (w/16 oz of skim milk) I had everyday January as my end-of-day dessert/reward.
    6) Also getting a little tired of eggs every morning (2-3 egg omelets with shrimp or bacon or broccoli, with a little diced green pepper and a little diced onion, sprinkled with a little Mrs. Dash).
    7) Decided to get active in the Atkins Forums in my second week so I can pull close to support, rather than gut it out out there on my own. I have a lot of questions to get answered; the forums will be help with this.
I'm a Type-A with entrepreneur and not much inclined to plug into 'discussion' groups, but I'm making weight-loss progress, love the changes I see in my mirror and the fact I can get Dockers on I haven't been able to wear for years, so I'm going to plug in to this forum and take...as well as give.
    9) Closing this message since I have to sign off now.
    10) However, I will be meeting some of you asynchronously soon.

Thank you for all of your advice, help and support in advance.

    Re: Introducing myself

    Welcome Fuzzee --

Breakfast doesn't have to be eggs...you can eat anything you want - we have programmed ourselves to believe eggs mean breakfast....I have steak and veggies for breakfast quite often and once in awhile I have steak and eggs for dinner. You can have a salad, leftovers, or whatever you want for breakfast or any meal.

For different suggestions on recipe ideas try Linda's site -- you'll find a lot of wonderful tasting things to eat. http://www.genaw.com/lowcarb/menus.html. Also make sure you drink a minimum 64 ounces of pure water (nothing added) daily.
I hope you've read the 2002 DANDR (Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution) - it's the edition we follow on this site.

    Good luck to you.
    Carole

      Re: Response to Introducing myself

Thanks for responding and the suggestions. I'll look at your recommended sight and discover some options. Good tip on water too. I've been including Crystal Clear vitamin enhanced flavored water in my hydration count. I'll pare back to straight H2O.
Also, I can't imagine anything easier that carrying an Atkins snack bar and shake with me in the car for my mid-morning snack. I've check every health bar in the health section of the stores I normally visit, and nothing comes close to the net carb count that Atkins provides. It's a no-brainer for me.
(I haven't been weighing myself because I've yet to buy a scale, however, after six weeks I'm tossing a pair of 44" jeans in the garbage today because they are too loose and baggy.)

Well.....bad news about the bars - we don't recommend them because they are known to slow weight loss...the ingredients aren't induction friendly but the Atkins Company is in business to make money and try to get money away from companies like slim-fast, Special-K, etc. You can use them once you get higher up the rungs in emergency, but it's just as easy to throw some cut up celery, radishes, cheese slices, boiled eggs, rolled up ham with cream cheese or no sugar pickles in your car as it is a bar...AND you know exactlly what's in those items, no chemicals, nothing that isn't good for you.

Glad you are going back to real water not some chemically enhanced drink...remember, Atkins is about whole foods, not chemicals not ingredients that you can't pronounce. Good luck to you.

          Re: Introducing myself

Somewhere I read the bars are OK for any phase, but I'll follow your advice and pack snacks along the lines of what you recommended, which will be a no-brainer too. Thank you.

my husband used to drink one of the shakes for breakfast every morning....now he mixes his own. Couple of eggs, ice, splenda, vanilla and a little heavy cream in a blender - they are great! Might satisfy you for your evening 'treat'.

I remember shakes and bars mentioned in the book by Dr. Atkins to use. I'll look it up. But I think the bars and shakes now are different than they were then. Now they seem to stall people out.

                    Re: Introducing myself

The book does say if you are in a rush or just can't eat a good on plan meal you can use the shakes or bars. He also says he stands behind anything with the Atkins name on it. Unfortunately since his death, now there are ton of items with the Atkins brand that are in no way allowed in his 2002 plan. So I'd suggest staying away from them. There are new posters daily stalled out and the biggest thing you see listed are the bars or shakes.

The eggnog shakes are awesome I usually have one a day, sometimes two. I use:

                    2 eggs
                    1 tbsp heavy cream
                    1/2 packet splenda
                    3-4 ice cubes

and whatever flavor I want that day. If I want original I add a nutmeg, cinnamon and vanilla. Pumpkin pie with canned pumpkin, cinnamon and nutmeg. Chocolate I add 1/2 tsp of cocoa with variations of a couple drops of peppermint for chocolate mint or almond for chocolate almond. One of my favorites is with pumpkin pie spice. Oh yum

That makes a small shake, about 1/2 a glass. So increase your eggs for a bigger shake. Also when you start out you will probably want the whole packet of splenda. I'm just to the point it started tasting too sweet so I cut back.

                      Re: Introducing myself

                      @poobears:

Everything you reference makes a lot of sense, particularly the point about post-mortem bandwagon jumpers

The last thing I want to do is 'stall out' since I'm mentally and emotionally into this transformation and, as I said in my profile: I'm not fighting 'the plan.'

So, I think I'll familiarize myself with the pre-2002 plan and act accordingly.

As for the eggnog shakes, I'll have one tomorrow.

(PS: Tried to change my avatar tonight to an actual photo, but something went awry. Will get it corrected tomorrow. Thank you everybody!!!)

                            Re: Introducing myself

Just checking in for a second to say thank you to all who have made suggestions. Didn't take the bar and shake with me this morning for a snack. Instead stopped at a grocery store for an early lunch (can't go 6 hours w/o eating something) for 3 deli roast beef rolled around a little cream cheese and sliced mushrooms. It surprised me how little it took to make me feel satiated. I mean, these 3 wraps were equal to maybe four hors d'oeuvres!

Bought the ingredients for the eggnog shakes (heavy cream, vanilla extract and sugar-free chocolate powder) and will try one tomorrow.

Hope to break 240 by next Monday.

                            Thanks again everybody.
