  • Starting Atkins for health reasons

    Hi there,
I did atkins to lose weight about for about 4 mos. in 2003-2004 and lost some weight, then I got pregnant and quit.

So, I am taking the plunge to try it again for health reasons. I had 3 grand mal seizures (1 in oct. and 2 in Dec.) and I know some people use the ketosis diet for epilepsy. I have had epilepsy since I was 15 but haven't had grand mals for over 12 yrs.

I also was told that I could have poly cystic ovary syndrome and was told to go on a high protien diet. The PCOS wasn't confirmed then because I had been diagnosed w/thyroid cancer and that took precedent.

I noticed over the past months a form of hypoglycemia when I wouldn't eat protien in the mornings.

I'm in the 2nd week of induction and started at a weight of between 208/206 lbs. and I am currently ranging around 20o now.
This time doing Atkins I've been impressed w/how far the bars and shakes have come in taste. I also realized ranch dressing was allowed for induction & was thrilled cause it makes my salads desireable.
I'm thankful to have wonderful support from my cooking husband, and my kids even ask if I can have a certain food on my diet. The foods w/the "A" on them are mom's.
So far I have only had one non-induction food(an endulge bar for the other phases)
It's been a little slower losing this time but I've started doing strength exercises and maybe building some muscle.
I'm looking forward to starting the 1st stage of OWL after the 14 days, as variety will keep me going and make Atkin's work for me.

Actually, the bars and shakes are NOT allowed on Induction and neither is Ranch dressing. The Atkins corporate site says these things are allowed but they also market them. Many folks find these products interfere with their losses. This site goes by Dr Atkins book, the 2002 version of Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution. According to the doctor, these processed foods contain many ingredients NOT allowed on Induction. Glad you found us--you may want to get the book and give it a read. We also have a thread on PCOS and Atkins in the health area.

      Welcome to ADBB!

Congratulations on your results so far!

I also realized ranch dressing was allowed for induction
What are the ingredients in the ranch dressing?

I've been impressed w/how far the bars and shakes have come in taste.
Atkins products, especially the bars, can slow down or even stall weight loss. We do not recommend having them. Whole foods are a better choice.

was told to go on a high protien diet
While Atkins is indeed higher in protein than the SAD, it is not a high protein diet. It is high fat and, at least during Induction, roughly 65% of your daily calories should come from fat.

Techinically ranch isn't allowed because it has added sugar way down the list. That being said most use it with no problems. Just like they do mayo. You'll just have to expirement and see if it affects you or leave it for later and use oil and vinegar type dressings for now.

The bars and shakes were allowed per the book only for situations where you just couldn't access real food. But the bars and shakes then and the ones out now are nothing a like. The ones now are not induction friendly and many stall out using them. Drop the bars, eat real food for snacks, drop the shakes and make your own eggnog shakes (they taste so much better anyways).

        Good luck

            Hey!
I'm 22, this is my first day on atkins, also have epilepsy, with absence seisures(but haven't had them for 6-7 years, as I take depakine chrono, drug). This year I had my first grand mal. I was in some store and I passed out, and hit few times on the ground with my head, chin. Don't remember anything.Ha! Ha!

So good luck to you! It's great to have support of your family
But this site is also very good for conversations...

              Welcome!

Plan your meals for a few days so you have everything legal in your home. Linda's recipe site is very helpful with delicious recipes - it will help keep you from eating the same thing over and over -- http://www.genaw.com/lowcarb/menus.html.

Exercise, take a non-iron multivitamin and drink a minimum 64 ounces of pure water (nothing added), daily. If you need anything we try to help each other here as much as possible.
