  • Changing mindset about dieting - after being overweight forever

If it's too good to be true, it probably is. You've heard it before. Right?

That's what I tell my kids all the time.

    I mean - come on - a diet without hunger? That's ridiculous.

Not so, you say? Well, you must be an Atkins diet veteran.

I wouldn't have believed it either, but my husband and I started Atkins on February 1st. After two weeks, there were some important realizations. We realized that we were literally addicted to high carb foods and refined sugar.

I'm embarassed to say that we rarely shopped the walls of a grocery store. I mean, that's where the food is that you have to prepare, cook, maybe even add seasonings. I was happy to tell people that, "I don't cook." We'd eat out at least three times a week, order in or fast food the others.

Well, needless to say, I found my kitchen - the big room with the microwave and coffee maker - dusted off my pots, pans, grill and cooking utensils. And - now we're cookin'.

By the way, did I mention that we've both lost 10 lbs. Oh yeah baby!

We're off to a great start. We need to work on exercising and drinking more water.

I'm realistic though. I know it's going to be challenging and maybe even hard at times. That's why I'm glad I found ADBB - an amazing resource and source of inspiration! Thanks to everyone who participates!

I look forward to being an active participant and hopefully an inspiration to a few throughout this jouney. Good luck to all!!

Are you moving on to OWL now that you've finished your 2 week induction? If you need help getting your water in daily there is a monthly challenge going on here on the board - many people find once they pledge the minimum 64 ounces or more they have better luck sticking to it.

Continued good luck to you both.

Thanks, Carole. I think we're going to continue with Induction for a while. I'm not craving anything and I'm not bored yet. So, we're going to stick with the basics for a while.

I looked at a few challenges. The water challenges seem like a good place to start. Since we're almost through February - can you believe it - I think I'll start with a March challenge.

          Thanks for the suggestion!

Kitkat, it is fine to stay on Induction a while longer but don't wait too long. Many people wait too long because they don't realize that they need to spend a long time on OWL to learn to maintain their losses, find the triggers that set their hunger off, determine their critical point for carbs, etc. Also a lot of folks find they slow down or stop losing on extended Induction and the losses pick up when they move to OWL. Just keep these things in mind. Jill

Thanks, Jill. That's great advice. The act of losing weight can also be addictive which is probably why extending induction is luring me. The thought of increasing carbs is also a little daunting. So, I've been reading the Dr's book and other posts and feeling a little more comfortable about the next phase. Our current plan is to stay on Extended through Feb and move on at the start of March. Thanks again! Kim
