My name is Jennifer and I only just discovered this board. I am calling this my 2nd real time with Atkins because I've had several starts that just didn't get past the first week. Back in 2005/2006 I lost 50 lbs with Atkins. I have since gained it all back plus a bunch more. I decided in 2007 that I absolutely would not carry all this weight into my 40's and, after much much thought and research, decided to have lap band surgery in October of 2008. I lost a total of 40 lbs (some from the pre-surgical diet) in the first few months but was hungry a day out of surgery. Even after adjustments I would be hungry. After three adjustments I couldn't eat chicken breast, many veggies, rice, noodles, beef and any meat that wasn't exceptionally moist. The food I was "supposed" to eat wouldn't go down without a lot of effort or vomiting. But I was still hungry. My eating habits became atrocious. I was always a slow eater but now it took hours. After more than a year I've come to the conclusion that I am a "lapband failure". I know its mostly my fault. The band works for a lot of people. I know of 6 people with the band and two have been wildly successful. The rest of us have faced our "failure" and moved on to Weight Watchers or, in my case, my old friend Dr. Atkins. I very much regret my band but still feel like it was something I had to try. So, here I am now, nearly as heavy as before the surgery and about to turn 38 with a worthless piece of medical equipment inside me. This time around has been a bit odd - I lost 8 pounds the first week but managed to somehow gain 5 the 2nd.
I have identified a couple of the problems and will be extra vigilant this week. I will stay at 20 grams of carbs for several months due to the amount of weight I want to lose. I think I don't handle many carbs well anyway. One leads to two which somehow leads to cake.
