  • Because diets don't work...

    Hi

I'm new to this forum but not to Atkins. It's taken a while but I do believe now that diets don't work, lifestyle changes do. So I'm not dieting this time, I'm in an ongoing programme to change the way I live my life.

My dad was a big man, my mum's always been slender and, as luck would have it, I follow my dad and have been big all my life. I was ill at the end of last year, leaving me fairly immobile, and that combined with work pressures saw me put on a stone (14lbs) in three months and living in a very small selection of clothing! For some reason this weight gain disturbed me more than any other; more even than carrying around my 'normal' weight.

I've tried Atkins before (as a 'diet') and fell off the wagon 10lbs in. This time - I have been following a new lifestyle since Jan 3rd this year -dropped a stone in a month. Hurray! My clothes fit! With room!

Feb hasn't been so successful and I find that I have maintained weight. There have been two instances of 'lifestyle abberation' (cheating?) this month though this was kept to a single dish. And they were small - I can be quite ruthless as I don't want to go back - ever. I am stuck to understand why I have maintained. I worry that I am not eating enough though feel full easily and have trouble meeting my net carb quota at times.

Work's lunch offerings are excellent though more often than not I feel full before finishing (1 sauce-free chicken breast and a hand-full of leafy salad with a mayo sachet often sees me full up). If I'm not careful I can also forget to eat, which I know is a no-no so make an effort to deal with this.

Any ideas of why I'm stuck at maintaining? Any and all advice/comments/constructive criticism are welcome if they help me get further down the scales!

Truly, I believe you should post a full day's menu and list your stats and where you are at in the Atkins ladder. There are a number of knowledgeable people here that will be able to help you, but they will need a tad more information.

Please do not get discouraged. You have made progress and with a little direction you will be back to losing again.

      Welcome back to Atkins!

I love your attitude about the lifestyle change because that's what it takes to succeed! As for the stall, it is probably just your body adjusting to your weight loss as it needs time to reset your setpoint. And, if you're not eating enough, you may be in survival mode which will stop the losses.

Just be patient and keep doing the plan. If you are still on induction, you should move up to rung one because that addition of extra veggies usually get the loss started again. Let us know how you make out!

The secret to maintaining is to leave extended Induction and do Ongoing Weight Loss. It is there that you continue to lose as you find out which foods and in what quantities your body can tolerate. Yes you will have a mis-step or two along the way but what you learn about foods and how your body responds to each food is the foundation for a successful maintenance.

My stats are not impressive because I am still working on the second half of my weight loss, but I have maintained the first half over 5 years without regaining it and that was without working things as closely as advised. I give you my humble opinion based on what I am seeing happen this time around and how much I am learning about my body by doing things correctly. I also hope to make this my last time around and a permanent change.

              Re: Because diets don't work...

Many things can keep you from loosing -- what are you eating, how much - how much pure water do you drink daily, exercise? How much weight do you have to loose? Where are you on the plan (Phase 1 or Phase 2?)

Have you read the book we follow here? The 2002 Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution. If you haven't it's wise to get a copy so you have full knowledge of how the plan works.

              Good luck to you.

                Re: Because diets don't work...

Thanks for all the feedback. I've started using FitDay (thanks for the link) and am fining it SO much more useful than my little pocket book of carb counting, not least because the book states 100g of celeriac has 0 (zero) net carbs as opposed to FitDay's 1cup has 11.6 net carbs (ARGH!). So, answer No1: I have been stuffing my face with carbs.

Answer No2: I have not been eating enough overall. I've gone over and recalculated my Feb food intake and the result is a daily calorific intake averaging at roughly 1200k. This is bad, bad, bad - and not what I want at all.

Feb also saw me glued to my desk doing 50hr weeks (excluding commuting) so exercise was, I knew, low, though last week I started getting off the train a stop earlier and briskly walking for 25 mins across town.

So, today I started over considering this Day 1 again. And FitDay has been very illuminating and incredibly helpful.

Next target: getting these Size 20 (UK) trousers off without undoing buttons or zip!

For reference, I weigh in at big-bummed 18stone 5lbs (257lbs) and want (need) to get down to c.12 stone (168lbs) though predict I will retain my English, pear-shaped bum!

Go back to Induction just for 2-3 days. That will stoke the ketosis up then go right to OWL. Glad you are finding Fitday useful.
