  • Starting to feel better!

    Hey everybody,
I figured I would introduce myself because I've been lurking around here for quite a bit. I'm a 26 year old male in the Philadelphia area and I'm trying to change my life for the better. I'm 5'11" tall and my weight has fluctuated from 200-240 pretty much my entire life. I must admit I'm not the healthiest eater around, and I always seem to come back to this point. In the months leading up to summer I bust my a$$ dieting hard and working out/running to drop the pounds I gained in the winter.
Well, I'm sick of it. I'm sick of the constant see-saw of my weight. I want to make a change, to be more conscious of what I eat and get my full confidence back. I spend too much time tugging on my shirts, and deleting the pictures that are taken of me. I'm tired of it!!!
I decided to join this site because I have been reading the board for awhile and I love all the support that everyone gives each other. My mom turned me onto this WOE. She lost about 35 lbs with it and she was able to keep it off for quite a long time..

So now that that's out of the way.... This is my 5th day of induction. I have read "some" of the book, but I must admit, not all of it. My mom has been receiving about 10 phone calls a day from me about what I can and cant eat.

I think the hardest thing for me to get used to, is eating some things that I would NEVER normally eat if I was trying to lose weight. I was always brought up to believe that a low fat/low calorie diet was the way to go to shed pounds. So, I'm struggling to try to get used to that.... but I was hoping I would post a couple examples of what I'm eating, and maybe I could get some imput.

Ok, I haven't really weighed myself, and I don't plan on doing so. The scale messes with my mind, it doesn't motivate me at all, it actually makes me obsess about things and that's not what this is all about from what I gather.

I assume I weigh around 235 lbs. I want to be in the 170-185 lb range. I feel like that is a healthy weight for myself. Its what I weighed 6 short years ago!!! I have been doing about 40 mins of cardio (either p90x or running) 3-4 days a week since early January. but of course, I just began my induction 5 days ago.

Ok so here is what I've been eating

Breakfast: 3 egg omelet w/ half cup of green peppers, 3 THIN slices of deli american cheese (about an oz) and 3 slices of bacon crumpled in. also: 2 cups of black coffee.

Lunch : 4 cheese and turkey rollups. - (only about 2 slices of deli turkey, and again, about another oz. of cheese)

Dinner: EITHER Chicken breast, steak, turkey burgers or sausage with usually another cup of peppers and about another oz of cheese.

Snacks: I have some celery and a no carb blue cheese dip.

Also I've been drinking 8-10 glasses of water a day and if I do have something else to drink, a glass or 2 of crystal light iced tea. (Quite a big difference from the 8-10 heavy beers I normally drink a week)

Everyone who I talk to claims that I am doing just fine, but It just feels so weird to be eating some of this stuff. I am not quite sure of myself with it yet.

Sorry for ranting on... guess I just had a lot to say. Any feedback on my diet or anything would be greatly appreciated. I look forward to talking to everyone on my way to a healthier/thinner me!

    Welcome to ADBB!

    >>I have read "some" of the book, but I must admit, not all of it.>>

    Have you read Chapter 11?

    >>My mom has been receiving about 10 phone calls a day from me about what I can and cant eat.>>

    Here's a handy list:

You can carry one with you, post it in the kitchen!

    >>I was always brought up to believe that a low fat/low calorie diet was the way to go to shed pounds.>>

    Did that work for you?

    >>a no carb blue cheese dip.>>

This isn't "no carb". Blue cheese has carbs, so anything made from it has to have carbs.

    Don't trust the labels.

    >>I've been drinking 8-10 glasses of water a day>>

You might want to try drinking 1/2 your current weight (even an estimated weight) in ounces of water. That would be about 100 ounces for you.

Don't overstay your welcome on Induction, either!

      Re: Starting to feel better!

hey atkinsgal, thanks for responding. I have NOT read chapter 11 yet. I've gotten the basics of the diet from the internet, but both my girlfriend and my mom have a book for me by this weekend. One is the 2002 atkins book. The other is a low-carb recipe book.

The label on the blue cheese dip says 0 carbs, but I guess I have to be careful with that. From my estimates I am eating around 16-22 net carbs a day.

Yes, I have been able to lose weight on low calorie/low fat diets. But it's VERY difficult. I was practically NEVER satisfied and it was pretty easy to fall off the wagon considering everything I like has fat in it.

Also, when I'm talking glasses of water I mean 12 oz glasses, so I think I'm pretty close to half my weight. I've been peeing like a race horse!

That's the chapter you need to do Induction.

        >>I've gotten the basics of the diet from the internet>>

Not all sources of Atkins on the Internet are accurate.

        >> The label on the blue cheese dip says 0 carbs,>>

        Labels lie.

        >>From my estimates I am eating around 16-22 net carbs a day.>>

If you want to post a typical day's menu, we can check your estimates!

        That was my point!

        Better to know for sure.

What ingredients are on the label for the cheese dip? Everything on the label has to be induction friendly to eat it. Most I find aren't. Also like mentioned yes it has carbs even if they don't list them.

            Re: Starting to feel better!

to be honest.... I haven't eaten any yet.. I might just hold off on it for now.

            So far today I had:

3 egg omelet with half cup green peppers. 3 pieces bacon and an oz of american cheese (deli)

Lunch I'm making a chicken breast with celery mustard and horseradish glaze. Prob saute up some red peppers as my side.

Dinner I'm planning on a 10 oz strip streak with ... you guessed it.... Green and red pepper strips.

If I snack, i might have 3 turkey and cheese rollups (maybe an oz of american and an oz of thin roast turkey breast)

(I LOVE roasted peppers... unfortunately I'm not a huge fan of other veggies.... I have to ween some of those in, but for now, I'm sticking to peppers

              Re: Starting to feel better!

              Hi and welcome Big Carl!!

I find that if I plan my meals for a few days I have everything in the house I need and I know at a moments notice what the next meal is. Linda's recipe site is very helpful with delicious recipes - it will help keep you from eating the same thing over and over -- http://www.genaw.com/lowcarb/menus.html. You really need to find something other than celery and peppers to eat -- look at the second part of the vegetable list for veggies with more fiber in them -- you should be eating 1 cup a day of something off this part of the list.

What is the "american cheese (deli)" you are eating? Is it Kraft Deli Deluxe cheese slices or is it cheese you bought at the deli? Make sure you know the ingredients of everything you are eating.

Finish reading the book -- the more you know the better for you -- it's best to know what you can eat instead of calling someone and asking them. Good luck to you.

Warm welcome to the ADBB BigCarl! Good to have you with us here.

Another non negotiable part of the Atkins diet is exercise... it really helps. Make sure you increase whatever it is you do at the moment, a bit. You can then build up slowly. The board challenges are a fun way to monitor your exercise.

                Happy losing!

                  Re: Starting to feel better!

Hi Carl, MY oldest son (22) just cut his carbs lower when he wanted to lose about 20 pounds and did fine. My younger son (20) lost about 50 pounds on Atkins last summer. One thing that helps is the veggies. He isnt a huge fan of cooked veggies so he ate a lot of raw veggies-broccoli, celery, peppers, green beans with Induction friendly dips. He is also a salad eater.

Drinking water helped both of them. Do bear in mind that the Atkins web site does not give the same advice as Dr Atkins in his book. We follow the book here. The results are better and healthier. I think your menus look good but more veggies and more variety of veggies would be better if you can manage it. Do watch the cheese intake--its easy to go over the allowance if you aren't very careful.

                    Re: Starting to feel better!

Good Morning everyone and thanks for the input... I added some broccoli into my menu last night to try and switch it up a bit. I am eating Dietz and Watson Deli cheese FROM the deli. I asked them to slice it VERY thin for me. It says 1 oz = 1 carb. 3 of my slices equal an ounce so I think I'm doing pretty good in that department. I was worried about overdoing the cheese so I've been very careful. I've ditched the blue cheese dip for now and I've made a Sour cream veggie dip for my veggies. 2 tbls is equal to 1.5 carbs, so I've been very careful there as well. I've also been going well over my 100 oz of water a day, because that is pretty much the only beverage I've been having.

Day 6 here and looking forward to when I can say its been day 60

Oh and I cooked up this mustard pepper stuffed chicken breast last night that was out of this world... I've been cooking big meals and throwing them in the fridge so I don't do any "emergency" eating

Hey everyone.... thanks for all the input, and Atkinsgal, sorry for my comments in the other thread.

It's been a little over a week now and I'm starting to get into my groove. I've been drinking around 120 oz of water a day and I'm starting to lose my cravings for sugar and bad food in general. The big test for me was this past weekend when I was surrounded by people eating whatever the **** they wanted, but I stayed strong. I still haven't weighed myself because honestly, the weight isn't as important to me as how I feel. My energy is up 100 percent and I am really learning how to eat.

Of course I am shooting to be slim by summer but as long as my confidence in myself stays high... I'm happy no matter where I am. I've been reading this forum nonstop and I thank everyone for sharing their success stories, and even their "not so successful stories". The hardest part of this WOE is still mental for me, but that is getting a little better each day. Even though I know Low-Carb works, I still second guess myself when I'm cooking up some Eggs, cheese, peppers and turkey bacon for breakfast.

I know if I stick to my exercise regiment of 4-5 days a week of 35-45 mins cardio and stay away from the "nonsense" food that has plagued me my whole life... I'll feel better about myself and thats all that really matters right?

Thanks again and more updates to come

Oh one more thing..... For anyone who is reading this who may be thinking about atkins but hasn't started yet, or is still wondering if it works....

The past few days, when I look in the mirror, I don't see that "lazy, fat" guy staring back at me anymore. I see somebody with energy who is working towards changing himself for the better. I hope that helps you with your decision

Me too! I've spent the past few years being tired ALL THE TIME and now that I'm not filling myself with carbohydrates and spiking my blood sugar only to suffer the crash later I feel great! I've even gotten back on a normal sleep schedule of going to bed at 10 p.m. and waking up between 7 and 8 a.m. I couldn't nap during the day now if I wanted to because I'm just not tired anymore!
