  • My Introduction...

Hello, my name is Miles and I am here to lose weight . Currently I weigh in at 270lb (well, I did on Monday) and am currently in the Induction phase and 4 pounds lighter. My menu consists of:

Eggs for breakfast with some bacon
"Cheese crackers" for luck with some lunch meats (the crackers are shredded cheese that I've cooked in a non-stick pan making them into 'crackers'. And I use "Frayo-naise" a mixture of frank's red-hot and mayo.
For a "dessert" for lunch I have decaf chai with cream and 2 splendas.
Dinner is steak and broccoli with butter and garlic with a dessert of the same.

I take my multi-vitamin in the morning and make sure I drink TONS of water (2 super-large gatorade bottles (full of water of course ) a day).

I'm not sure if its some sort of placebo effect, but I certainly feel sharper and more alert . I know that I probably should be eating more veggies, unfortunately I'm not a terribly big fan of raw vegetables without some sort of dip. I'm pretty sure that I am following the rules... but the book that I have is the "Atkins for Life".

    Nice to meet everyone...

Welcome to the board, Miles, and congrats on your loss!

Yes, you do need some more veggies and you are allowed Ranch dressing as a dip. Are you counting your carbs or just guessing?

We follow the 2002 edition of the Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution and you should really be reading it.

    good luck to you!

      Re: My Introduction...

Going by what's on the site and the book that I have currently... I am consciously making decisions based on carbs and counting them, but not keeping a journal of carbs or anything, just making sure I stay under 20 carbs.

Can I use ranch during induction?

        >>not keeping a journal of carbs or anything,>>

        Not a good idea.

The problem with not keeping track is that if you run into a problem, then you don't have the tools to figure out how to solve it.

        >>ust making sure I stay under 20 carbs.>>

There's more to Atkins than that!

        >> Can I use ranch during induction?>>

Yes. Though you need to read the list of ingredients. Not all ranch is created equal.

          Hi and welcome Miles --

There are several programs out there for keeping track of your daily carb totals, my preference is www.fitday.com but I'm sure someone else will tell you there's is better or they prefer another program.

The book we follow here is the 2002 edition of Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution so the advise you will receive will be from that book. Check the ingredients of your lunch meats for sugars or anything else not allowed. I do the same thing with cheese to make crackers only I cook them in the microwave on parchment paper....or I use 1 slice of Kraft Deluxe Deli Cheese and cut them into squares and nuke them on parchment paper for 1 minute....both ways are good!

It does sound like you need more vegetables. I use Hidden Valley Ranch dressing but never more than 1 tbsp and dunk things (including my salad greens) into that instead of pouring it over foods.

          Good luck to you,
          Carole

            Re: My Introduction...

Forgive my ignorance, however is that particular version of the book very different from the one that I have or the information found on the website? This board seems to be the place to go when wanting information on the diet and so I want to follow the board quorum, however I'm curious as to what in that version of the book is so different?

Thanks for the advice so far! I don't count the carbs, however I have a very set menu for myself during these 2 weeks and did my 'homework' in terms of checking the main atkins site and choosing only foods allowed (such as the lunch meat I choose is the least processed that I can find and no carbs (turkey breast)).

            Thanks again...

Remember your sweetners are limited to 3 servings a day. If you have 2 in each "dessert" you are going over on your sweetners. I think you'll find with the cream you really don't need that much sweetner in there. I only use 1/2 a packet for an eggnog shake, cant' imagine how sweet 2 in a cup with cream would be.

                Yes.

Atkins for Life is for those who don't have much weight to lose or who are on maintenance.

The "textbook" for doing Atkins is Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution (2002).

Thanks for the reply, I will go get the book. Is the information on the website the same as the book (in terms ofi my induction food list?)... want to make sure I'm doing what I'm supposed to (with the exception of the suggestions already listed above) while I await the book.

                      Re: My Introduction...

Ok. I have bought the book and modified the diet currently I am eating:

                      Breakfast
3 Fried Eggs w/ 3 strips of bacon

                      Lunch
                      2 Hamburger Patties w/ Cheese
                      1 cup of Mushrooms

                      Dinner
                      Steak
2 Cups Salad w/ Ceasar Dressing and bacon chips (no carb kind)

                      Snacks
Haven't really needed any as of yet, however I drink a coffee in the morning with 1 splenda packet and heavy cream. For dinner I have a tea with the same.
During the day I drink well over 64oz of water

How are the changes are they more along the lines of what I am supposed to be doing? (Going by the 'getting my carbs from veggies' and took the veggies from the 2 categories for a total of 3 cups).

                            Re: My Introduction...

Welcome to the boards. I look forward to following your progress as the weight comes off!

The best thing that you are doing so far is asking questions. That is the most important thing. It has saved my butt a few times!! My suggestion to you is to try to spread the veggies throughout the day. It helps me to get them all in my system as well as to stay (cough) regular...

Also, make sure to take a hard look at OWL. You will reach that point soon and should consider rung one which adds more veggies. I found that I put off rung 1 too long and as soon as I upped my carbs with the veggies, I dropped more pounds quickly.

Hope that helps! Best of luck.

                            1st goal: 139 (earlier weight)
what the rungs mean to me:
                            rung 1 - more veggies
rung 2 - dairy (some milk in coffee)
rung 3 - seeds, nuts (mostly sprinkled on salads)
                            rung 4 - berries, melon
                            rung 5 - wine -
                            rung 6 - beans, hummus
                            rung 7 - other fruits
rung 8 - carrots/ potatoes (nah, prolly not)
rung 9 - whole grains (fresh Dutch breads...)
                            Major Goal - 128 lbs/ healthy range
                            (on to pre-maintenance)

                              Hi and thanks for responding

My question stems from the 'more veggies' portion. I'm still currently in the first 2 weeks (and technically wasn't doing it 100% correctly during the first week and have since changed my habits). When should I switch over to OWL(1)?

To date, while I have a lot to lose, I have only lost 5lbs. Though, thinking about it, 5lbs in a week is pretty amazing. Anyways, back to my question with regards to the induction...

With the cup of mushrooms and the 2cups of lettuce, I am hitting that "max" for veggies (according to the book & website info here). Should I still include more? The veggies are as 'spread' as I can make them without having them in the morning. Any advice you include would be amazing! Thanks for the support all...
