  • NEW MEMBER - I'm Shane and I'm not showing

Hey my name is Shane, I'm 21 - I started Atkins on Wednesday February 3rd weighing 279 pounds. I am in my fourth week now (Thursday the fourth will be the start of my fifth week ) and I currently weigh 256 pounds.

I'm so happy I've lost that much! I've read the book and just started OWL. Adding a serving of veggies to a meal for three days a week. I lost 17 pounds in the first two weeks. (10 the first week and 7 the second) I decided to move onto OWL because the weight wasn't coming off as nice as it was the first two weeks. I know it is supposed to slow down though.

ISSUE****: The only issue I have is I'm not showing...... I would think I would notice something after losing 23-24 pounds. I feel the same way... and look the same. I don't look like I weigh 280 pounds, my friends always guess 230 or 225. The reason is because I'm proportionate, I don't have ALL of my fat in my stomach or in my legs. Its spread throughout making me look stocky.

Do you think I'm not noticing because I'm losing in areas all over my body? Otherwise, what should I do? I was doing moderate workouts 3 times a week. I was in athletics my whole life so maybe it isn't enough activity. I'm guessing I'll start showing once I get in the 230's? Which is about a 50 pound weight loss.

Re: NEW MEMBER - I'm Shane and I'm not showing

I also have my gained weight spread all over - people always underguess my weight by oh, I don't know, 50 pounds or something. I have always been athletic too, played a lot of different sports up until the past however many years when I finally just got so fat I didn't feel up to it much anymore - didn't have the energy.

I had to lose a LOT from my high weight to start changing sizes and for it to REALLY start being noticeable. I wore 3x shirts and tight 48 pants at my high weight of 351. Without looking it up, I'm pretty sure I had to lose below 300 before I dropped the first size, which is when I really could first tell. I mean I could tell a little along the way, but nothing that would just knock you over. And yes, it was mostly because just like I GAINED all over, I also have been LOSING all over - wrist, ring size, lower and upper arms, neck, chest, waist, hips, thighs, calves. If someone loses 20 pounds all from one spot, obviously it shows up a lot quicker than those of us who lose a little from 10 different places.

The more I lose, though, the more easily I notice it. Someone at work the other day was pointing out how she had noticed I had lost weight during the several months we have known each other, and that is only maybe 20 pounds lost during that time.

The more you lose, the more you will probably be able to notice - I can easily tell 10 or 15 pounds now, which is a heck of a lot better than before.

One thing I did that I think is helpful to me is that I take photos of myself wearing similar type clothes (polo and khakis) with the same backdrop every month or so.
I can compare what I look like along the way more closely, and small changes you might not see in the mirror become more obvious that way. Especially if you compare the photos from several months ago to the present.

I also take my measurements from a lot of places a few times each month. It may not be much of a drop from one time to the next, but when I compare to the previous month or from where I was near the beginning, it is eye opening.

Just know that as you keep losing it will show up in time. If you need proof or encouragement, take pictures, try on clothes you know didn't fit before and see how they fit now (or ones that fit before that start hanging off you), and/or take measurements and compare them.

Re: NEW MEMBER - I'm Shane and I'm not showing

Im built just like you. Weight is evenly distributed across my body. From 300 to 275 there is a significant difference (IMO) in my face and my pants and shirts obviously fit looser but other than that you cant really tell i have lost weight. I didnt notice the difference in my face until the 3rd week. I think you will see a big change once you hit 240 and again at 220 and so on and so forth. At 18 i was 200lbs (im 5-10") i was in good shape. I played football for 13 years in little league and highschool and i worked out a lot so i was carrying muscle and wearing size 32 jeans. It sounds to me like you have a similar background & build so i think at 200 you will look like your 165.

Re: NEW MEMBER - I'm Shane and I'm not showing

I swear i just typed a response to this and now i dont see it The short winded version is that i am built like you and other than my face theres really no way to tell i lost weight other than looser fitting clothing. From 300 to 275 my body pics dont look much different. But in highschool i was 200 and after playing 13 years of little league and highschool football i had a lot of muscle and i wore a size 32 jeans. I looked like i was 165. Since your 6'2... i would guess you will see a dramatic difference in the next 10 to 20 pounds.

                      Hi again Shane,

That's why I asked your height...That's what I thought, you are taller rather than shorter, and sometimes Taller men tend to not show the weight loss as much as a shorter man in the earlier stages, since you have more "body area" to spread out your loss.

Hang in there, all of a sudden you will really "SEE" the difference! You are doing great!
