  • (Re-)New Introduction

    Hi,
I went on the Atkins diet, originally January 2004. I stuck to the guidelines better than glue, and after a year, I had lost a total of 50 pounds.

I've recently gone through some serious medical issues, as a result of cancer (all gone - doing good), that caused me to become very sick, and I lost 15 pounds - but some how, I've managed to find it again.

I'm going to Germany, and really need to get back to eating correctly. I need to lose at least 10 pounds before I go. I doubt that I'll be very good at sticking to the healthy way of eating, when one of their main staples is Nutella and bread, but to start, I'd like to lose some. I'll worry about the rest after I get back home. The Atkins diet worked for me in the past, and I'm hoping for success again.

The most difficult thing for me to talk about is me - I never know what to say - so I guess we'll call it good for now.

PS Is sugar free jello allowed during the induction phase? It seems to me that I was able to have it before, thought I should check to be positive. I don't see anything in the book about it. Thanks!

    Welcome
First of all congratulation on beating cancer. That is quite an accomplishment.

I hope you will lose those ten pounds. This time around may be a bit different - things change so just be prepared for that.
I always found Germans to to super healthy but maybe not in a low carb way (and then there the bier of course)

Jello if it is made with an acceptable sweetener is OK. The most common sugar free jello is made with aspartame - a sweetener Atkins thought we should avoid

Hi Stitcher-- just do the best you can while traveling. Breakfasts in Germany are easy--coldcuts, cheese and a boiled egg are almost always available for breakfast. Salads are around and dinner can be things like sauerbraten. You can also eat sausages on a plate with some terrific mustards and ignore the bread. Berlin has some great Turkish doner and kebabs available too. You may find it easier than you think over there!

        Re: (Re-)New Introduction

        Hi again!
Thanks for the quick replies. I will make the jello, although it does have aspartame. The reason that most everyone says to avoid aspartame is because some people have bad reactions to it. They have tried to even link it to Fibromyalgia. Being a Fibromyalgia patient, I have completely avoided anything with aspartame for over a year, as a test. No changes, so apparently I'm not sensitive to aspartame. I have a friend who, if she takes even one bite of anything with aspartame, will get a severe headache. Temperature changes can affect the aspartame, making it more lethal if it has gone from hot to cold, cold to hot, etc. So, I am very careful, and have never found a jello product without aspartame. I'm going to make some jello now! lol

In Germany, I'll be in Frankfurt, at a friends house. I will be there for Easter, and hunting for a couple milka-schokolade eggs. <g> For the most part, it shouldn't be too hard to stay true to the diet.

As for now, I'm off to the doctor to discuss my blood tests. My triglycerides are extremely high (even though my cholesterol has gone down), so before I go too far here, I guess I better get the doctors ok on the diet.

        Thanks again,
        Stitcher

          Re: (Re-)New Introduction

Well, if you want to lose a quick 10, here is what I would do... I have hypo thyroid and am very resistant to weight loss...
Day one... 14 oz coffee with 2 splenda and 4TBLSP heavy creamer... One boiled egg.
Lunch- take two slices of ham, spread with cream cheese, stick 1/4 of a dill pickle in it and roll it up.
          Snack--pork skins...
Dinner--Steak and spinach salad using vinegar and oil dressing that you make at home going a bit heavy with the olive oil..
          Snack--sugar free jello

I'd do variations of this eating plan for a week... look at low carb recipies and ideas... but truly... Sticking with atkins is the key...

I too lost 50+ in2006 but gained it all back when my thyroid went bonkers.

You can get back on the wagon but you need to stay there in the maintenence or ongoing weight loss phase... carbs are addicting!!

            Re: (Re-)New Introduction

I think that the biggest problem I have with any type of diet is that I'm extremely picky when it comes to eating. Thus, your menu just wouldn't work with me. lol

I don't drink coffee, but have been drinking tea (with splenda), and tons of water. I don't like cream cheese, don't like pork skins, don't like spinach in any way shape or form. lol I'm not real fond of beef, other than hamburger, and even that can be yucky.

I never did gain back all the weight that I lost back in 2004 - only 8 pounds, so I don't feel too bad about it. My thyroid has been bonkers since many years before I went on Atkins the first time. I do bacon and eggs for breakfast (fixed a variety of ways). Instead of salad, I opt for celery and a few radishes. I do tuna (with a smidgen of Miracle Whip & onion), topping it with grated cheese. Dinner is what ever meat I'm fixing for hubby, and some veggie. Jello is my dessert.

Because of my Fibromyalgia, exercise is difficult for me, however I do have a gazelle that I "try" to get on and do at least a half a mile. I walk when I have the chance, and when my pain level allows me.

I'm a little older now, so things will work differently, but heck... I deal with Fibromyalgia, I'm a 3-time cancer survivor.... I think I can lose a few pounds.

You could hunt but not eat them.

Miracle Whip is not acceptable. The ingredients are:
Water, soybean oil, vinegar, high fructose corn syrup, sugar, modified food starch, eggs, salt, mustard flour, artificial color, potassium sorbate as a preservative, paprika, spice, natural flavor, dried garlic.
              Real mayonnaise would be fine.

                That's good to know, thanks!

You could hunt but not eat them.
I'll do my best on that, but it's gonna be tough! lol I may end up starting over once I return home.

I detest mayonnaise, it actually makes my gag reflexes kick in. I did use Miracle Whip the last time I did this diet. If I fudge a little and use the Miracle Whip instead of the mayo, does that totally mess up the diet? If it messes up the diet too much, then I'll just have plain tuna with onion and cheese.

I did one thing different this time around.... I talked to my doctor about going on the Atkins, due to all my medical issues. He gave me the green light!

                  Re: (Re-)New Introduction

Miracle Whip simply has too much sugar to be Atkins friendly.

What some people do is to add Splenda to mayonnaise for that "sweet". Would that be something you could do?

I would also be concerned about eating tuna ... it's full of mercury, and mercury is a neurotoxin.

According to the Natural Resources Defense Council, I can eat it safely, as long as I don't eat it more than 3 days in a row. Again, something I didn't know, but will eat with caution now. Thanks!

I was at the grocery store today, thinking of buying some ham... something that I could grab as a quick evening snack, without having to cook something. But then I thought back to this post. Tell me please, which part of this is not correct for the Induction menu?
                      Thanks!

                        Re: (Re-)New Introduction

The limit of cream is 2-3 Tbs.

                        Not enough vegetables.

Sugar free jello is made with aspartame ... and it's a sweetener, so the limit of sweetener is reached.

One egg probably isn't enough breakfast.

                        Ham generally has sugar.

This menu really isn't much food.

I was referring mostly to that menu not having enough vegetables and enough food.

There is a limit on sweetener? That means I've reached my limit a long time ago, as I drink a lot of tea with Splenda.

                              Yep.

Chapter 11 and 18 of the book.

And you're counting the carbs in the tea, right? And the carbs in the Splenda?

You know that tea isn't water, and doesn't count as water.

You are reading the book, Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution (2002), right?
