  • Time to get healthy and off all the meds

    Hi everyone,

Atkins worked for me before and I know it will again. I know enough to be expect all the "withdrawls" I'm about to face, but once I get past all that mess it will be "down scale" from there.

Glad to be here...... best of luck to everyone!

Welcome to the forum. You won't need luck, just grim determination, and a will to change your life, and your way of eating (WOE) for the better. Tell us a little bit about yourself.

Looking forward to seeing your progress reports.

          OK.... confession time!

Joined this site on March 11th with good intentions. It is now May 4th and I have done absolutely NOTHING to get started. I now have a choice: I can beat myself up about not taking action OR I can start fresh TODAY. The following is a confession to myself:......

Why am I here again???? Well..... it's because today I have a follow-up appt. with my doctor today. I have high blood pressure and diabetes - both "controlled" by meds and have to see the Doc every 3 months. Prior to each 3 month follow-up appointment, I have to have blood work (you know... so the Doc knows what to yell at me about - lol). Anyway, as fate has it, the lab that I use has now started mailing out "complimentary" copies of lab results. Soooo... now I know BEFORE I go in for my appointment what he's going to yell at me about: blood sugar still up, kidney function questionable, cholesterol totaly unacceptable.

Obviously my priorites were not where they should have been. You see... I recently - thanks to Match.com - met a wonderful man. During the last couple of months we have been seeing quite a bit of each other and going out to dinner ALOT!! Why is it new relationships --especially as we get older) are so focused around eating???? My focus quickly shifted from my heart health to my "heart" health....... Anyway; I could give a million reasons why I have not taken action but the fact remains the same: IF I DO NOTHING TO IMPOVE MY HEALTH, MY HEALTH WILL NOT IMPROVE.

Now my concern is all the negative I hear about Atkins as it relates to kidney health. Because my lab report hints to deminished kidney function, I have to ask.... "Is Atkins still the place to be?????" Here is where I seek anyone's input.

          Thanks for listening..........

            Hallo Minia
            Thanks for updating.
I am not qualified to answer your question about the Atkins diet and your kidney. I think this is something you need to discuss with your doctor.

I think it is great that you are thinking about improving health - cutting down on carbs would certainly help you with some of your issues.

Good luck. If you decide to stay with us let us know how things go

Re: Time to get healthy and off all the meds

With your health concerns, any dramatic change in your WOE should be run past a health care provider. My cholesterol and triglycerides were fine before Atkins, but they're even better now, and at three months in, my liver and kidney function were good and "unchanged".

Another reason to do this diet under Dr. supervision, is that your medication requirements may change dramatically in the early stages.

Discuss your plans to "do Atkins" with the doc. Hopefully they will provide you with a path forward.
