  • newbie, day 5 of week 1 induction

    Hello,
    Im a newbie here.
I'm eating as per FAQ's for induction. I'm exercising every day. I'm in ketosis consistently and have good energy level and no cravings. I might have slipped up on the water intake, so today i upped it to be sure.
Problem: not having a big weight loss! It's been 5 days and i lost 1 lb.
I take levoxyl (prob many others do as well), could that be an issue?

Are you reading the book, Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution?

If you want to post a typical day's menu, with net carbs and quantities, we can take a look.

How much water are you drinking?

Re: newbie, day 5 of week 1 induction

The FAQs are helpful, but the book explains how and why, so you can make smart decisions...reading the book gives you your best chance of succeeding.

1 lb down is one pound down...don't turn your nose up at it...it beats one pound up!!! During the 2 week induction, on average, one can expect to lose 5-10% of the weight one wants to lose. You want to lose 46lbs, so 2.3 to 4.6 lbs in two weeks. You aren't far off for being 5 days in.

If you post a menu, with quantities, of everything that goes in your mouth, we can check it for errors and make suggestions

I a newbie also... I was told to be careful of the type of exercising I do when starting out because the exercise could be turning that fat into muscle.... muscle weighs more than fat.... so you will not see your loss in the scale..... Hope this helps

That's not exactly how it works. You will be losing fat and, possibly, gaining muscle.

If you gain muscle, that's a good thing... no something you should be worried that it could be happening.

          muscle weighs more than fat
A pound of muscle weighs just as much as a pound of fat -- one pound.

Muscle, however, is more dense than fat, meaning that one pound of muscle will occupy a smaller volume than one pound of fat. Therefore, if you have a higher muscle mass, you will be smaller than if you had less muscle and more fat, even if your weight is the same.

Gaining muscle will mean your measurements will likely go down since muscle tissue takes up less space per pound than fat. Also gaining muscle means you will burn more calories all the time. So its a good thing.

It also takes time to build up muscle. Those trainers that tell you oh you just gained muscle this week that's why you didn't lose are feeding you a line. You don't just instantly gain muscle because you start working out. Now you can be retaining water in your muscles because they are stressed but they don't just pop up out of no where.

If your diet is high in things like sodium, or if you are drinking caffeine, or aspartame, or any of the other things on the diet that we are supposed to avoid or limit, you could be experiencing a diet induced "stall". *See DANDR for the true definition of a stall (4 weeks? of no weight lost or inches)

                  Thank you for responding.
Things are looking considerably brighter today. Scale read 156 ½ (down from 166)
Having my thyroid bloods drawn this morning just to be sure.
                  Regime:
                  3:30 am levoxyl, water

7:30 am 1 slice of swiss cheese (< 1 oz), mulitvitamin, ca/vitD tabs. 8 oz water.
                  Exercise, 8 oz water
B: egg, swiss cheese (<1 oz), mushroom (1/4 c) omelet; herbal tea 16 oz with stevia.

                  Push water 24 oz.
L: roast beef, raw cauliflower 1 cup (mayo to taste), ca/vit D
                  Finish water requirements
                  1 slice swiss cheese (< 1 oz)

D: chicken, mushrooms/peppers sauted in olive oil. cavit D 8 oz Diet Rite soda with splenda
1 slice slice cheese (<1 oz)
*A possible reason for my not losing initially: I had bronchitis/congestion. Decongestants raise my BP so I avoid those and it was rather a long 2 weeks of “uncomfortable”, especially lying down. I took sugar-free cough drops to get some sleep. They have the sugar subs Atkins says to avoid. By yesterday I didn’t need them anymore

oops! Didn't realize about "Intro to Atkins BB" before i posted on Induction blog yesterday. This response is a duplicate to my response in the other forum.

                    Great loss!

You are at the max on the cheese limit. Keep in mind that will sometimes start to stall people so if you have problems later maybe cut back on the cheese a little.

Be sure you count carbs in your tea, herbs contain carbs. Also are you drinking any water after lunch? Need to get some in the evening too, couldn't tell if lunch was a water cut off or not.

Re: newbie, day 5 of week 1 induction

I push the water in the morning or otherwise I find that i dont get enough in. I actually hate drinking water so i have to constantly push.
I have the diet rite (sweetened with Splenda, no sodium) as a little treat for myself.
I will reduce the cheese intake.
Any suggestions as to what i can have in-between?

You may not need to reduce cheese, some can lose well on the 4oz, you'll just have to see what works for you. I cook up several steaks and cube them up (or chicken) and keep them in a rubbermaid type tub in the fridge. When I get hungry and I just grab some out. Dip it in ranch, mustard or eat it with some cheese. I also keep dill pickles in the fridge for snacking on between meals. If you like veggies you can dip some veggies for a snack.

I see you've lost a lot of weight! good for you!
I might try the steak. I was doing veggie as snacks but i missed them at meals and was trying to eat them in a more balanced environment.
No pickles - love them but BP could be a problem.

Since we are discussing Ano's problem in the induction forum I will close this one. Too confusing to have two advice threads going on on the same topic at once.

Anyone who has more advice for Ano can go to this thread
