  • Brand new! Intro and Question!

    Hey everyone!

Just wanted to introduce myself... I'm 21, female, college student. I gained a lot of weight when I went on birth control and generally eating terribly-- some days I used to drink three sodas, eat chicken fingers and fries, pizza for dinner, a couple of fruit snacks and ice cream for dessert. It's no wonder I gained so much weight! Everything I ate was either at a restaurant or out of a box.

I'm getting my life together and starting to eat right. I'm on day 3 now and already feeling pretty good. I've decided to cut sugar and caffeine completely, so I'm only drinking water and sticking with meat and veggies, with a little cheese. It's been very difficult but I am truly feeling refreshed having all of the processed crap out of my body, and all this water helps (I used to drink MAYBE 1/2 glass of water, instead drank soda and lemonade only!).

However, I did have a question... I'm not eating any bread/carbs but I realize there are some minimal carbs in veggies. Looking up my daily intake online, it looks like I'm still consuming 12-14 carbs per day... what's up with that? For example, my meals today:

    Breakfast: Water, two eggs scrambled
Lunch: Lettuce, light caeser dressing, a grilled lean chicken breast, water
Dinner: Filet of talapia, asparagus, zucchini

Am I on track with what I've been eating? Any help is appreciated

    Welcome to ADBB!

Are you reading Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution (2002)?

    >>I realize there are some minimal carbs in veggies.>>

True. Atkins isn't "zero" carbs ... you should be getting, on Induction MOST of your 20 net carbs from Induction vegetables.

Are you doing your own cooking?

You shouldn't really be having "light" salad dressing ... it generally has added sugar to make up for the loss of fat.

In case you're not reading the book, check out:

      Thanks for response!

I checked the label and it had minimal sugar-- special diet dressing apparently. I did indeed read the forum intro posts you linked and have done some research on the diet, but haven't picked up the book. I'm strongly considering it though...

Would you consider going to a class in your major without buying the textbook?

Same with Atkins ... you can't "do" what you don't understand.

        >> I checked the label and it had minimal sugar-- special diet dressing apparently.>>

        What are the ingredients, exactly?

"diet" dressing might not be Atkins friendly.

And there's many names for sugar!

Wow you are doing well. I think your menu looks pretty good. Just remember that if you are doing Atkins you need to have to have some fats as well. No light dressing (because it has mroe carbs) and fats with your supper.
And yes have your veggies. And check out the rules.
Good job on starting clean up your menu

I'm curious, how tall are you?
And definitely swap the "lite" dressing for the full-fat version... or make your own, that's much better and then you can be SURE there's no sugar in it. You need fat on this diet (the book explains why.)

Re: Brand new! Intro and Question!

I agree with the others as well, add some fat and get rid of the light dressing. Please get Dr. Atkins New diet Revolution 2002 book, you can also check it out at your local library as well.

              Congrats and welcome aboard.

If you are following the 2002 plan, which is the one we follow at ADBB, then you should be counting net carbs, not total carbs.
