        Re: I'm back

I know the feeling. I'm back after far too many years. I lost 50 pounds in 6 months the first time (2003). I tried to come back a couple of years later but don't remember what happened that caused me to fail. Stressors of some sort, I know.

Then, about 3 years ago, I was diagnosed with Type II diabetes, high blood pressure and off the scale cholesterol. Pancreatitis came after that, followed by sleep apnea. Now my joints are wearing from all the weight. I tried other diets, one of which you pay $300 a month and they send you pre-packaged food. I lost 10 pounds the first month then just got to the point I couldn't stomach the taste and quit, and gained it back again.

I was reluctant to come back to Atkins after having tryglicerides topping 2700. Yes, you saw that right. Not two hundred seventy, but two thousand seven hundred! My doctor was in shock! Why was I still alilve? Why hadn't I had a heart attack or stroke by now???!!! Now I'm on even more statins and crap than ever. But, I finally made a decision. Amazing for a Libra, I know. But I've decided Atkins will at least get my blood sugar under control which will remove several pills from my regimine. My concerns are pancreatitis and cholesterol. Some people have reduced their cholesterol with Atkins and I'm hoping it works for me. I'll watch the fats I eat and try to use olive oil instead of animal fats to keep the cholesterol consumption at a minimum. But I know one thing for a fact. Atkins worked. Back in 03, when I lost that 50 pounds in 6 months, I looked and felt better than I had in 10, maybe even 15 years. Wish me luck everyone. I know the rules by heart. It's just making myself follow them until this WOE takes over and becomes second nature again. Then my cravings will dissappear, my depression will dissappear, my diabetes will dissappear and my fat will dissappear. I start on Monday, since this weekend is full of birthday parties (it's like Christmas at my house the first two weeks of April) and so on and so forth. I'll mind my p's and q's till then, but officially, I start Atkins again Monday 04/12/2010. Let the loosing commence!

bykerdruid - lol. I'm guessing there were no responses because people didn't want to feel like they were hijacking the thread away from edgefan. I bet if you posted this in a new thread of your own, rather then as a response to someone else's introduction thread, you'd get plenty of comments.

Edgefan - Welcome back! I liked Atkinsgal's response as she subtly points out that luck really has nothing to do with being successful on Atkins, it's all about good planning. However since you've already been wished "good luck" and "good planning" I'll just wish you: Good Health!

                    Re: I'm back

The first 10 days of April have 6 birthdays. It's more like trying to deal with a mini Christmas. The number one reason I'm going to put it off til Monday is because I always start new "projects" on Monday when I have the benefit of 5 days of routine to help keep me on track. The "since this weekend is full of parties" is because I have every intention of enjoying a couple of pina coladas, which are not Induction friendly.

                        Re: I'm back

I've been through Atkins before, I know how to plan for events like holidays and have done so.

The fact remains, I intend to enjoy a couple of Pina Coladas this weekend. Period. There's no sense in starting Induction if I'm just going to wreck it with a couple of Pina Coladas two days into it. When I start Induction, I intend to do it "by the book" just like last time. Like I said, I start all new "projects" on Mondays and restarting my Atkins this coming Monday (which I started the first time on a Monday) is not a big issue. I had the idea maybe I shouldn't have rejoined this board until AFTER I re-started Atkins. One of these days I'll learn to follow my gut instinct....

                          Re: I'm back

Thanks for all the good...wishes lol. I need plenty of that.
I finally got my wife to agree to go lo-carbing with me..she usually is the type that the only way for her to lose weight is eating small salads 2-3 times a day. We have talked about it and we're starting Monday April 12th.
bykerdruid- we'll be stating the same day as you.
We are getting our menu together and trying to be prepared as much as possible, because that is where its at BEING PREPARED!

Any good suggestions for some good dinners?
I guess I should have said vegetables...while on Atkins a couple years ago I would always eat broccoli for my veggie...until I got not 1 but 2 batches of bad broccoli and haven't been able to eat it since, I tried it again just 3 days ago and again was over-steamed and tasted like paper.
So....any good sides to go along with my meats?

I have a friend thats doing Atkins and he showed me these little snack sized yogurt's that I think contain 3 carbs. Is that recommended on induction?
There's a little bit of question I have about some foods that are low carb but contain nitrates (pepperoni is one) Whats the deal with nitrates?
Pepperoni was one my snacks before but I read somewhere that nitrates are bad.

                          Well, Its all starts tomorrow!!!!

Side note- The wife and I are both at an ALL TIME HIGH in weight.
                          She's starting at 279 lbs, she's 5' 4". When we met 16 years ago she weighed 130 lbs, I weighed 300, now I'm 368.
                          NO MORE!!!

                          Thanks again for everybody's comment.

It really depends on your food preferences. Did you check out Linda's recipes?

What vegetables that are on the Acceptable Foods List do you like?

I have a friend thats doing Atkins and he showed me these little snack sized yogurt's that I think contain 3 carbs. Is that recommended on induction?
Nope... no yogurt on Induction. Plus, those yogurts (and I should probably write "yogurts") are full of chemicals.

When you get to OWL Rung 2, you can add plain yogurt back.

There's a little bit of question I have about some foods that are low carb but contain nitrates (pepperoni is one) Whats the deal with nitrates?
Dr. Atkins recommended avoiding processed meats that contain nitrates. His concern was their possible carcinogenic properties.

If you read the ingredients, you will also see they contain sugar (dextrose, for example)... so not a great choice.

That being said, consuming processed meats, in moderation, might be just fine for you. The focus should be on unprocessed meats though.

                              Well, Its all starts tomorrow!!!!
I would suggest planning your menu today.
