  • Very discouraged

And I'm smart too. But I can't get it going. My partner just isn't interested in knowing... So I cheat, then I just go off induction. Next Tuesday I'm going travelling to the States for three weeks where I will be fed by others' menus (and of course tempted by food I never get over here in Ireland)... I don't hope to start Induction today for this reason… Cowardice? Maybe I'm not so smart after all, at least not about my health. We live rurally so there aren't many local friends to hope for support from...

    I'm just discouraged.

NEVER GIVE UP! Every day is another opportunity to do better than the day before. Every day is a new beginning. Even if you screwed up yesterday and don't feel like trying today, tomorrow is a new chance and one day it will be THE day. Just like quitting smoking, every day I tried then one day turned into two days, turned into a week, month, years. Cig free 4 years and counting! Same with Atkins. Every morning get the attitude that today is a new day to reach for that goal once again and one day it will simply be the way you live.

Believe me, Atkins works. I'll save you my long drawn out sob story but I'm coming back to Atkins with great anticipation. Why? Because I know for a fact it works. I was on it for 6 months and lost 50 pounds. Blah blah excuses blah stresses blah blah, and I'm sick and tired of failure so I'm coming back to the ONE "DIET" that actually worked for me. One day at a time buddy, one day at a time. You CAN do it.

Hey! I did quit smoking and have been smoke free for… hard to remember. Seven years now?

What really frustrates me is that I was always SKINNY. Growing up.. till I was 40... Not at 47 it seems I just put on weight. I've never been heavier! (Alas! What happened to that old eat-anything metabolism?)

I just had my lunch. Leftover chili, a pretty big bowl. Next hunger pang I will start in on with water.

come on Fuddle - we need some positive attitude...you can do this, you just gotta wanna! [I don't actually talk like that, just seemed appropriate]

Make a plan, think of how you are going to respond to food choices in the states. Stick to the basics...you can do it, you just have to believe in yourself.

do you have a journal [in journal chats] - if not, go out and create one and get some of this off your chest! I highly recommend it.

        Good luck.

I'm usually an upbeat person, but it's my own bloody sabotaging that's got me down. Stupid! OK, so I beat myself up today.

          That's dumb, innit?

I didn't know about the journals, BarrNone. Maybe that will help! It's really frustrating feeling "alone" and I know I'm not. But I think if I don't interact with others about this I'll do less well than if I do.

Today, I'm not going to have any more carbs. Today, I won't make the microwave popcorn that is in the cabinet.

            Re: Very discouraged

Interacting on these boards helps a WHOLE lot. I used to be here ALL the time, back when I lost 50 pounds. A journal of what you eat helps a lot too, keeps track of what you did and what you need to do. Nothing like others in the same boat to help you row to the goal. Any chance you get to sit and chat with others on the Atkins board, do so. You'll build friendships as well as confidence and an attitude that let's you control your cravings, not your cravings controlling you.

Go look for some yummy snacks that others have listed on this board that will take the place of that yucky, carb laden popcorn.

                Re: Very discouraged

Even if you're not ready to start Induction before you travel, you can go low carb. Eat your veggies etc, but stay away from potatoes, rice, pasta, breads, and pastries. Also, limit any alcohol, juice, or milk while on vacation (or eliminate it if you can). Start simply like this, then when you come back, and are ready, you can go into full induction.

That's how I started my weight loss, I lost 10 lb in the first two weeks, and I was at an all inclusive resort in the Dominican for the second week. When I got back, I started Atkins at Rung 1. It's not the ideal way to do it, and I had more issues with cravings than some because of it, but it's a possibility. Just because it worked for me, doesn't mean it will work for you.

Ideally I would reccomend you start induction, but when travelling, it might be more planning than you can handle.

Farley, thanks for that. I know I *can* stay away from potatoes, rice, pasta, breads, and pastries. It's most likely the whisky and beer that my friends abroad will expect me to share... but I've read what you've written several times. Yesterday and today. It makes me a lot less discouraged.

Since it's not allowed on Induction (and not for a long time after!) ... I would just get rid of it altogether. You must know somebody that would love to have it.
