  • For me, my wife and kids, I'm starting Atkins

    Good Afternoon everyone,

My name is Rusty and I found your good board by trying to find an alternative to my arch-enemy, RICE! I have always eaten food until I was stuffed, order pizzas for the family and eat 5-7 slices, and of course, eat cups of rice with butter. When my weight would increase I would simply buy bigger clothes. I started having sleeping problems and one day I woke up and just didn't feel right. I truly thought I was going to have a heart attack soon, at age 39. I did some research on different plans and started on 03-15-10, @ 384 lbs, with the "7-day diet." It was a massive change for me from what I was use to. After that I started reading about Atkins and thought I was following it until I broke down and purchased the book. I learned then that I was going in-and-out of "ketone's" (fat burning mode) or whatever it is. I read the book and I am now on my fourth full day of induction. Today I weighted in at 346.5 lbs. I haven't set a goal but I want to continue this journey for the rest of the year. I've completely given up all beverages except water (180 ounces daily), no pastas, bread, beer, snacks, or chips. I love the way I'm feeling right now and can't wait to read some great ideas of food alternatives to try. It's amazing how the simplest of things I made hard on myself. Thanks for reading this and I will not bore you anymore with my story. Best of luck to everyone on the forum and I hope you all meet your goals!

Well, right now because of the work schedule, I would say me 80%, the wife 20%. I find myself preparing two dinners on some occasions: The familys pastas and other goods along with my meats, we split the vegi's.

In the 20% that your wife cooks, is she up to speed on Atkins enough?

Oh yea, thanks for asking atkinsgal08. She is my biggest supporter and always make sure what I'm eating is low cab. I think she is one of the biggest reason, if not the biggest, that I'm doing so well and on track.

Welcome Rusty! I just read your intro and smiled when you talked about pizza and rice....I had pizza for lunch - Atkins friendly and delicious! I also had fried "rice" the other night with a pork chop and enjoyed every bite. You will find wonderful recipes on Linda's site as well as in the recipe area here on the board. http://www.genaw.com/lowcarb/ - I would have never made it as long as I've been on Atkins without Linda's site.

Good luck to you -- you'll do great

Hey Rusty, You are getting a lot of good feedback. Just one thought, if I may. I was concerned when I read that you had woken feeling unwell. I am a big guy and used to wake up feeling out of breath with a racing heartbeat. Went to my Doctor and got tested; I had sleep apnea, a major problem for us heavy set guys. Just a thought. If you are a heavy snorer get checked out fast!!! The good news is that dropping weight will help but why not be safe and run it past your doctor?

Re: For me, my wife and kids, I'm starting Atkins

Thanks Mick, I've scheduled an appointment with my doctor in two more weeks just to do a "check up" of how my body is doing. I'll certainly ask him about that. Its funny because my wife complains about my snoring over the last few years but when I started losing weight, I lost a lot in my face and the snoring has stopped. I also don't wake up with a stuffy nose and sore throat so I'm helping my body out in a lot of different parts. Thanks for the heads up Mick.

Imagood1, I totally found so cool recipes on the sites and plan to check them out. I made the "Taco Bake" and the entire family loved it. I was hoping to save some for the next day but my wife and kids destroyed it. It was nice to cook just one complete meal for the entire family.

This forum is full of really good people and tremendously helpful questions and sites. It will definitely be a big part of my journey to stay on my plan for the rest of the year. Thank you to everyone that responded to this thread and the everyone one else that has posted info on the site.
