  • Last Resort Diet--New Member

    Hi everyone,
I'm Julia. I'm a 22 yr old college student from Virginia. I just decided to join Atkin's 3 days ago, because I was desperate to lose weight. I've been struggling with weight all my life and started dieting at the age of 10. Nothing has worked for me. Only one diet worked and when I went back to try it again, it had stopped working. I was starting to think that I have a medical condition and thought about seeking help, but before I run into the doctor's office and pay tons of money, I decided to do this diet as a last resort, so I'm really hoping this works so that I can finally feel better about the fact that I am not different from anyone else and not suffering some medical condition. I've been very anal about getting everything correct to make sure I didn't mess up on the diet in any way, shape, or form, but day three of induction and I don't think I'm seeing results. I'm the type that wants to see results fast. When am I going to start seeing results? Has anyone followed the diet all the way through and NOT gotten results? I feel like my body is weird and I'd probably end up being the only one that does not get results. I'm banking that I'm the same as everyone else, but after so many failed diets and just the fact that my body reacts differently to things than everyone else, I'm really feeling like a loner and really starting to question if there is anything that will work for me... =/

    Welcome, Julia!

At 5'3" and 137 lbs, you are not overweight based on your BMI. Since you are so close to your goal weight, is natural if your weight loss is slow. It doesn't mean you have a medical condition... it's just unrealistic to expect to lose fast.

I'm the type that wants to see results fast.
Most of us started Atkins wanting to be thin yesterday, but it's not how it works.

If by results you mean weight loss... it will happen at the rate at which your body wants to lose. This is likely a slower rate than you would hope for.

There are other results one sees on Atkins, other than weight loss, such as appetite control, stable energy throughout the day, improved health, etc.

Has anyone followed the diet all the way through and NOT gotten results?
How would knowing that help you?

    after so many failed diets
After so many "failed diets", you have probably slowed down your metabolism. That's what temporary diets do.

Atkins is not a quick fix, it's a way of eating for life. If you see it as another short term "solution", your results, if any, will also be short term.

    What book are you reading?

          Hi Georgiana,
thank you for the advice. I went and got a pinch test and my BMI came back as 28%. I'm 3% over the overweight mark. =/
          I've tried so many diets...
1st attempt was at age 10 where I starved myself...
a few months later I decided it wasn't working and did something else
from age 10 up until now (I'm almost 23 now)...i've tried:
          -slimfast
          -cut junk food/soda, etc. diet
-cereal diet: ate NOTHING but cereal for 2 months.
          -kellog's challenge
-a diet where it involves eating meat all day, then next day eat veggies all day, then the day after eat carbs all day and then u do the routine all over again..and also drink lemon juice at the end of the meat day to clean out the oils in your system
          -hollywood diet
-soup diet: pretty much drank veggie soup all day long and had one meal
-tofu diet: ate a ton of tofu
          -organic food diet
-oolong tea diet: drank a lot of tea, esp after meals to cleanse out any oils
-green tea pills, hydroxycut, lipo 6, fat blocking pills, hoodia
-a diet where it involves drinking a lot of caffeine and doing cardio everyday for at least 2 hrs and eating less
          -subway diet
-a diet that involved eating only protein and RAW GREEN veggies (can't have carrots, tomatoes or anything that is not green), so i ate at least 12 oz of brocolli everyday, ate a lot of celery and spinach, etc...i could only have a fist size of white rice before i worked out. i couldn't put salt, seasoning, or anything on it. only steamed, boiled, or grilled. drank only protein drinks, low carb or sugar-free energy drinks, milk, and at least a gallon of water a day. ate only white meats: chicken and fish. had to keep my body's pH balance more towards the base side....so eating things with a lot of alkaline rather than acid. i ate an average of 300 g of protein a day. i had one cheat day out of the week. had to eat every 2 hrs. had to snack on almonds. not allowed to eat chocolate or cheese. if i couldn't take it, i could eat one square of chocolate..but it would need to be dark chocolate..so i was eating 90% dark chocolate to satisfy craving. i worked out an average of 5-7 hrs a day doing martial arts, weight lifting, cardio, crossfit, and circuit training. instead, i built a ton of muscle, but no weight loss...just ended up looking bulky with fat on top of new muscle (went from 118-133 lbs within 3 months) <~~~this was definite the hardest diet i've ever been on, i ate very clean, healthy, and frequently, but needed to eat a lot considering i was working out so much, but i didn't achieve the results i wanted as far as weight loss. i eventually got used to eating this way so continued eating this way up until now (so a total of about one and half yr), except instead of being as strict..i allowed myself to eat more chocolate, but i still eat 90% dark, have cooked veggies instead of raw, have other veggies than green ones, and added turkey in my meat selection.
-p90x (this seems to work, but it takes a LOT of time and dedication...and i did this after my very strict diet, so i was very burnt out as far as extreme motivation goes. plus, i have a lot of class and work to be able to keep to this work out/diet plan)
-semi-vegan diet (half the food i ate during the average day was vegan)
-semi-vegetarian diet (ate chicken and fish)
          -low fat diet
          -carb cycling
-calorie counting diet (started with 1,500...didn't work...cut back to 1,000...didn't work...cut back to 800...didn't work)
          -the cave man diet
-the no dairy diet: that involved me eating up to 2 cups of oatmeal in the day before your work out, then eat veggies and protein for last two meals.
-high fiber and veggie diet: pretty much vegetarian diet, except ate a ton of fiber too
          -Isagenics Cleanse
          -Sonne's #7
-Some other cleanse/detox diet that I can't think of at the moment...
          -Akai Rice diet
-diet where it had me eating 5 healthy meals a day...6 egg whites, fruit, and cereal in morning, sandwich and salad for lunch, fist size of meat, veggies, and good carbs for dinner with veggies as snacks in between (i did this diet back when i was 11 yrs old and lost 15 lbs within a week and then gained 5 lbs back, but kept the 10 lbs off for years, so really liked this diet, but went back to try and do it after my bland...no salt/seasoning, excessive exercise, only protein and raw green veggies diet and it didn't work on me anymore)
-salad and chicken diet. This is pretty much all I ate every single day.
-a diet where it had me eating carbs in the morning, protein in the afternoon, and veggie at night.

and those are all the diets i can think of for now.

Maybe you should try to eat healthy (which to me right now means Atkins maintenance diet - lots of fresh whole foods - exercise some and not focus on weight for a bit. That list looks a bit impressive to me So many diets I had never heard about.

              Anyways good luck

You listed more diets that I could knew...

I went and got a pinch test and my BMI came back as 28%. I'm 3% over the overweight mark.
The BMI is not measured in percentage, but in kg/m^2.

By "pinch test" I believe you mean skinfold measurement test (done with calipers). What this test measures is body fat percentage, not BMI. 28% is a healthy body fat percentage for women.

Well, the information at Atkins.com relates to the 2010 version.

Some of the information there is incorrect, too, just so you know.

I suggest going to the library and getting a copy of the book, before Atkins becomes another "diet" on your list.
