  • Hi from Toronto, Ontario

i have been on the Atkins diet now for 2 months. So far i have lost 32 pounds, as i take meds for thyroid, i am wondering if this is safe for me...
i am some what concerned about it...

I know my Doctor will not be in favour of this diet as he Figures you have to cut calories.. and exercise to lose weight, so i have not mentioned this to him...

I hope someone may shed light on this for me....

I am enjoying the weight loss and will be disappointed if i cannot continue.

I am not sure why you don't think it is not safe for you.
Many people who low carb also have thyroid issues.
    I am one of them.

    What specifically is your concern?

      Re: Hi from Toronto, Ontario

      thank you for replying...
I have a heart condition and i was reading where one of the ladies ended up with heart failure and blamed it on her thyroid medicine ... and at 67 years of age i became worried...Losing weight for the first time in 30 years is so wonderful. but not at the risk of hurting my health

I just needed to know if any one else had problems or knew if this was a dangerous combination..

i am over joyed at finally losing some weight I have 50 more pounds to go, but as i say not if it is not a good combination with thyroid meds..

        Where did you read this?

Are you reading Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution (2002)?

Ah, so what you read about this woman might be "urban legend" or even on a site that attempts to discredit Atkins?

The point I was trying to make was that if you read the book, you'll see that doing Atkins is safe.

                  Re: Hi from Toronto, Ontario

There is a thyroid thread here you might go to that thread and find out if anyone there has developed heart problems with their thyroid medication. I would ask my physician what they think about the medication he/she has you taking and discuss the risks of heart problems with him/her.

there are articles on the web regarding this question - google it (heart failure from thyroid medication - Google Search=)- there are several .... it's not an urban legend.

This is something she should discuss with her doctor.

The combination of thyroid medication and Atkins does not cause heart disease.

There's a lot of misinformation online... don't let it discourage you.

Are you reading the 2002 edition of DANDR?

I know my Doctor will not be in favour of this diet as he Figures you have to cut calories.. and exercise to lose weight, so i have not mentioned this to him...
You are cutting back on calories -- although indirectly -- or you wouldn't be losing weight. On Atkins we have a so-called metabolic advantage, meaning that we can eat a few hundred calories more than on a high carbohydrate diet and still lose weight. So you are creating a caloric deficit... there's no reason to eat less and cheat yourself of nutrition.

i am over joyed at finally losing some weight I have 50 more pounds to go
Are you still on Induction or did you move to OWL?

The OP asked about the combination of Atkins and thyroid medication, not about thyroid medication. The answers were given in relation to the question asked.
