  • My Story

    Hi there. My name is William and I'm from the heart of England. I'm in my late fifties. My story goes like this, around eight years ago I was diagnosed with two types of skin cancer at the same time. One was melanoma.
    Just before my diagnosis, about two weeks before it, a friend of my wife and I died from melanoma and it happened after just five months from her finding out. Rightly or wrongly I thought my time had also come and I went into a kind of grieving for myself I suppose, a depression of sorts. I was very down. After three operations on my skin I was given the five year remission target to pass, hopefully, as they say.

    Slowly though, as time went on, I started to gain my confidence but reached a point where I thought heck, life is for living and I became determined to live it. I ate and drank all I wanted but inevitably I piled weight on. It was a disasterous outlook. I knew I needed to do something about it. I went to a slimming club twice and spent alot of money. I lost weight but after I stopped going it piled back on with another couple of stone on top. Along the way my elder brother had a heart attack (survived) but I got dragged to the docs for monitoring. I've been monitored ever since. My cholesterol is high, my blood lipids are high, my tryglicerides are too high, my bad fats too high and my blood glucose is high, but just under the figure that leads to a type 2 diabetes diagnosis. My blood pressure is high.

    Of course I've been given medication but my bloods are still poor and my blood pressure above what they like to see for my age. My weight was just accelerating. I had heart checks too and there is some thickening of the muscle itself. Low and behold my knees developed arthritis and a childhood road accident injury to my ankle has also surfaced as a real problem. Exercise is not an option, not even swimming. I used to train professional sportsmen and I was head trainer at a gym, so I know my way around those issues.

    The consultant at the hospital advised me to see my GP and ask for slimming pills to help reduce my weight. I did and she refused because of my heart and blood pressure. Since then they have been trying to get the right combination of drugs to help me.

    I've always believed in the science of Atkins, and my knowledge and experience as a trainer supported it. In the end I thought that I am just going to have to sort myself out. Et voila, here I am. I think, on reflection, that bad carbs were slowly killing me and doing a good job of it too.

    I started Atkins two weeks ago and have just finished induction. I've lost eighteen pounds. My target is to lose eighty nine pounds and get down to a correct BMI for my height.

    I am already feeling heaps better and can't wait to get my bloods checked in about three months time. After two days I lost five pounds total, after seven ten pounds total. Days eight and nine I lost nothing, then after day thirteen I'd lost eighteen pounds. I lost nothing on day fourteen. I am exeedingly happy.

    I don't have the latest book, I use a 2004 verison but I have aquired a few of the older books. I have a new grandchild due any day now and I'm determined to do this for him and my other grandson who is autistic. I've been hovering around this site for a couple of days but I'm here now. Thanks so much for creating such a supportive environment. I had my first oopsie roll and muffin in a minute yesterday thanks to this site.

    This is a poem I wrote at the start of my journey LOL;

    Day one of Atkins so here goes
    as for the outcome, heaven knows.
    I’ll find it tough, I do suppose
    but soon I hope to touch my toes.
    No more whispers or spiteful barbs
    I’ll beat them, like I’ll beat the carbs.
    and when I’m slim and less in weight
    I’ll tell em, "It was Atkins mate."

    Welcome to the board!
    You really have had it tough and I hope this way of life suits you well and you reach your goal.Congrats on your start thats a great loss.
    You should follow the 2002 version not the 2004 try to get hold of one because we go by that version on the board.
    I liked the poem you wrote and I wish you all the best with reaching your goal.

                Hi and welcome! Sounds like you really have the right mindset for taking charge of your health now. That was a big reason for me too.

                Female/Hypothyroidism/Arthritis/Fibromyalgia - If I can lose weight on this, so can you!
