  • Coming Home Again to Atkins

I’ve enjoyed reading through many of the posts the past few days, and wanted to jump into this group with a quick introduction so I may move from the shadow of observation to the light of participation.

Five years ago I went on Atkins, losing from 250 to 200 in about six months. After using Atkins to lose the weight I went back to my “healthy” lifestyle of carrot juice, breads, veggies, tons of fruit and very little meat. In 2003 I found myself in a doctor’s office facing a diagnosis of adult onset diabetes 2. He found very little wrong with my diet, so he began medicating me, first with Avandia then Glucotrol XL, then Glucotrol XL combined with Metformin. As my fasting blood sugar began to climb so did my weight. A few weeks I ordered the Atkins book on diabetes published shortly after his death. It truly has been a Godsend. Everything clicked. So this past Sunday, April 24th, 2005, I began the road back to good health. At 6’1” and 275, my goal is to lose 75 pounds in a year, and to be off all diabetic medication in a few months.

Thanks to Dr. Atkins, and thanks to this board for providing a network of support.

    Peace and light!

welcome to the board since you read the book you might recognize our Canuck from the diabetic section in your book. She too found Atkins and it saved her life. she is totally of meds now. Post an intro over there and meet somefellow Atkins diabetics.

Make sure your treatment team is in the loop because eating low carb you can drop your blood sugars back down to normal very fast and with your meds actually be in insulin shock.

          Happy low carbing.
