  • All about Cali-n-me

I started Atkins 2 years ago and lost 48 pounds in 3 months. I was so happy with that weight loss! I looked and felt wonderful...then I slipped -- and kept slipping...and I have gained every pound back that I lost...plus a few. :sadblinky But...I woke up one day last week and realized that I can't keep carrying this weight around with me. My daughter, Cali, is 9 years old (almost 10) and is 4'5" tall...she stepped on the scales last week and it read 131 pounds. She looked at me and said "Mommy, this isn't cool!" and she cried. Right then and there I decided that the whole family is going to make a chance...to help Cali, and to help me.

We cleaned out the cabinets, threw away all the junk -- and went on a huge shopping spree at the grocery store. We bought a ton of veggies, good meats, cheese -- and fruits. Cali loves fruit, and I don't feel comfortable taking fruit out of her diet at her age. She has fruit for breakfast, and once more during the day, whether it is for after school snack, or evening snack. We both started our new way of eating on Monday. So far I am down 7 pounds, and she is down 2 pounds. I am so proud of her!

My husband and I are in the process of buying a new house. We are supposed to close in 2 weeks. Cali will have to change schools, and she is looking forward to starting her new school thinner and healthier.

My grandpa passed away yesterday, and I slipped -- got a chocolate shake from McDonald's...but I'm back on track today.

I know how to do Atkins for me -- I'm an old pro. :nod But I need some help with Cali. So far I think she is doing great. She is keeping a food diary, and we are punching that info into fitday every evening. One question I have where Cali is concerned is her daily water intake. I know that *I* struggle sometimes getting all my water down every day...and I think that 64 ounces of water for a 9 year old is pushing it. All this week, she has drank 33 ounces a day -- and a couple of days she drank 40 ounces. Does anyone have an idea of what she should be drinking every day? I will post more about this in the forum where it belongs -- I just thought I'd ask here, too.

    Thanks, in advance! :yes

    First Welcome to the board!

I might try calling Atkins Nutritionals, I had a question once and they were very helpful. There is a number on the Atkins website www.atkins.com. I hope you find the support you need here, it's an amazing source of motivation and support.

    Good luck!

:wave :wave Hi Cali congrates on your 2 pound loss woo hoo for you!!!!

      :wave Hi Mom.
the fruit will be a key issue can you make sure she choices the lower glycenic fruits like the berries? pears are good too. If you have access to an Atkins For Life book Dr Atkins ranked the foods on the OWL carb ladders where fruits are returned to our WOE based on GI,carbs and serving size to let us know which whould effect our craving controls and blood sugars the most. he made it easy to follow with eat sparinly for the high ones in the group and eat often for the low ones.

If she loves nuts you might be alble to fix her up some lower carb trailmix with nuts unsweetened coconut and some of her favorite fruits dried without added sugars to lower the blood sugar carb impact of those fruit
      snacks.

Fluid intake should be discussed with her Dr as well as any extra vits and minerals the added water will cause her to need. Even if the doc doesn't approve of Atkins he should approve of not eating the processed foods and the fresh fruits and veggies being added to her diet.

      Happy low carbing.
