I would like to start running. I ran in the military and ended up with bad hip problems because of it. I could use all the advice I can get about how to not injur myself and how to start out. I am more of a "burst of strength" kind of person, prefering to lift heavy weights rather than do cardio but I hear running is pretty good for your heart so here we go.

Re: New to Running/Jogging
There's a program called couch to 5k which is a nine week program designed for those just getting into running - imagine going from 'couch potato' to running 5 kilimeters in approx 2 months! it's 20 minutes/day and u can do this on a treadmill or outside - basically it's interval training - walking briskly then running for a short time like 60 or 90 seconds and walkng again/ then running again etc Here are some links to read. i am very interested in doing this program and actuially started a few weeks ago but i've been sick for more than aweek now. For me, it will take longer than 9 weeks because i am doing week 1 for a few weeks until i'm ready 2 move on, but that's the beauty of the program you can go at your own pace. There are also downloads for your mp3 w/ or w/out music to take w/ u as portable coaching. i posted them recently, if i locate the links i will post them here too.
Good Luck and Happy Running!

Re: New to Running/Jogging
First of all.. good job even taking those first steps...
I wanted to throw my two cents worth... for years, i was always a "walker" to try to help my weight as in high school I played Varsity soccer and running was never a problem... well when the weight came, running left.. but, now thruogh all of my hard work here through Atkins I am a running fool. The downside right now... its winter and here in Northern ohio the temps are in the teens... NOT RUNNING WEATHER!
but... i do have to say that the couch to 5K is a neat program but more or less, I want to say... Do What YOU can do... taking the first step was the hardest, but keep at it and do what you can... and I hope you have an ipod or somethin to give you a little bit of extra support!
Good luck and keep us informed!

Hi, I am new to running to and have downloaded the couch to 5K app for iphone 'Get running'. I am starting the program tomorrow. At the moment, I tend to walk/run 3.2K and then go on the cross trainer for 20 mins. I would love to run 5K. Good luck

Re: New to Running/Jogging
Can you all give me any information of advice about how to about running on a treadmill?
I was wondering what you would set the treadmill to as per mph, when it says "walk slow and easy" and "run".
I was looking at the Learning to Run 10K program.
Any advice? I would love to be able to run outside, but with 6 children, sometimes that is near impossible!
