  • Re-induction

    I'm on my 5th day of Re-Induction.

So far it's going GREAT. I've kept the carbs low, eaten really good-tasting food AND kept the calories low. Plus I've exercised until I am sore.

I've also made a conscious effort to keep the fat content high based on Dr. Atkins comments at the bottom of page 274 where he says that keeping the fat ratio higher in relation to protein will help slow losers lose.

I stepped on the scales this morning and it was down 0.4 pound. That's not a lot, but it is a move in the right direction!

Today the calories are going to be on the high end because I had a wonderful taco salad for lunch with half an avocado, cheese, sour cream and black olives.

Counting calories is something I am going to have to do, in addition to keeping the carbs low. I've noticed a trend... if my calories average under 1400 I lose. If they are in the 1500-1700 range, I maintain. If they go over 1800, I gain. And that's taking into account the 200+ calories I burn in exercise almost daily.

I was pretty worried about what I would be doing to my body by keeping the calories really low. I hear so much about going into starvation mode. But I read what Dr. Atkins had to say about it last night, and that worry is gone now.

You only go into starvation mode if you restrict fats and protein... not if you restrict calories.

    Here's a quote from page 294:

The other benefit of a controlled carbohydrate nutrition program is that your metabolism won't go into starvation mode when you start exercising....

If you instead give your body all the protein and fat it desires, your body will know that food is plentiful. It will then accept your running, walking, stair climbing or bicycling and leave your metabolism to hum along, and maybe even step up its pace.

Oh that is great to read.... especially about the metabolism humming along.. and maybe stepping up the pace! I am all for that! This is encouraging to hear. I really do need to reread the book.

Thank you Sunny for posting this!

Glad it was something you could use, too, Sandy. It sure took a lot of my worries away!

I just finished dinner. I just had chicken with lettuce and bell pepper since I had such a big lunch. Am hoping it will hold me till bedtime.

Still have 4 glasses of water to go. I didn't space them out like I usually do today.

No exercise for me today. Sunday is my rest day. I'm glad, too, because I had calf muscles that were sore this morning, but they feel great this evening. So I'll be ready to go in the morning.

Great reminder Sunny, I do think you have to eat at least every 6 hours though, which has never been a problem for me.

Lynne, I DO have to eat very often... usually every 3 hours, maximum 4. I usually end up with 5 mini meals and a snack. Try to work it where I can have a bigger dinner so I don't feel deprived.

I did get hungry before bedtime. So I had another decaffeinated coffee with cream with 2 t. coconut oil. It helped immensely.

            Re: Re-induction

Yesterday was day 4 for me but I slipped up. The company I was expecting cancelled early in the afternoon so I ended up getting bored and overate. Most of it was legal except the peanut butter and the 2 small bites of Harvard beets. Today I'm being extra careful and I've already exercised for 1 and a half hours.

Sunny, thanks for the info on the ratio of fat to protein because I had forgotten about it.

Nyna, I think the exercise covers a lot of little mistakes!

I am absolutely sold on eating the higher percentage of fat. My results are amazing.

Today I could pull out my jeans' waistband far enough for my whole hand to fit inside, and the jeans are starting to feel baggy. It's a wonderful feeling!

Wow Sunny, I am almost identical to you as far as calories go.... above 1800, and I gain or stall, 1400 and below to lose for me. It's hard to keep it that low however, for me anyway.

You are a wealth of knowledge. Thanks for all the helpful info.

And, congrats on the baggy jeans! Doesn't it feel wonderful?!

I have slipped into a pair of shorts this evening that haven't fit me in a LONG time.... yes, it DOES feel good!!!!

I know I'll do better tomorrow. I just have to plan out my mini meals and not leave anything to chance when I start feeling hungry. I was trying to keeps the carbs and calories a little lower earlier in the day, and I know better than that. It never works for me.

                    Re: Re-induction

Today was a lot better. I kept the calories to 1332 and don't feel hungry. And that included my flax seed cookie this evening. It makes such a difference in how content I feel.

I like the idea of splitting moderate exercise into two sessions. The walk earlier, and then working in the flower bed seemed to keep my metabolism up without draining me.

Feeling pooky today. Had a bad tonsil infection. Went to the doctor and got antibiotics for it. Worked in the garden a bit... have taken two naps today because I feel so tired.

Today is a low carb - high calorie day for me due to eating easy things instead of preparing decent meals.

Sunny - with an infection nothing would probably have tasted good anyway!! Hope your meds kick in and get you well soon!! Did you get your veggies planted today?

Carole, no, I didn't get them planted. I bought some more today while I was out and am planning to get them in the ground tomorrow.

I also got some strawberries to go with the blueberries, raspberries and blackberries, so I will be all set for OWL.

I had another out-of-control appetite tonight. I think I may have to drop the Splenda altogether as it's the only thing that I can figure that might be the trigger.

Hi Sunny! I missed you yesterday! Sorry to hear about your infection because tonsils can be so painful. I hope you are feeling much better today.

I just had a cup of tea with no sweetner in it and it wasn't too bad but I definitely prefer it sweet but figure I can eliminate 2 carbs a day by doing without it.

I envy your working on your garden already! Near the end of the month, we will put in our onions, potatoes and cabbage but flowers will have to wait until May because we get frosts right up to the beginning of June. So for now, I'm just looking at the seed catalogs and dreaming of getting my hands and feet back into the soil again. It's snowing right now!

                              Re: Re-induction

I have my "garden" planted inside for now....I have cucumber, zucchini, cauliflower, wax & green beans. I've never started things from seed but I thought I'd give it a try this year. If they don't grow I'm not out a lot of money, last weekend Lowe's had seeds for .10 a package so I got all these veggies for .50 - and if I need to go buy plants that someone else has grown that's ok. I won't try tomatoes from seed, that is one vegetable that I'll only buy good looking large plants! I'm hoping that at least one of these takes off and I can smile when I look at them and say I remember when it was a tiny seedling...LOL!!

I need to get my garden space turned over - it will be about a month before the nights are warm enough to leave anything out overnight. I can't wait. I'm going to mow my yard today - it's grown enough now (since the rain) that it looks ragged.

Happy 1st day of Spring to everyone!!
