  • Green Leaf Lettuce Fresh from the Garden

Ok its a-coming and its a-coming to beat the band! LOL

Its wonderful and so delicious. I planted so many different kinds and the flavors are so incredible. I find myself munching on pieces of different lettuce just to see the taste difference and some of them are blowing my socks off. I don't even know the names.

And it is so good with a little Good Parmsean cheese, drizzled with freshly made Italian Seasoning Dressing.

I planted mixed leaf lettcues too. Mine are only about 1 1/2 inches high right now though so I haven't eaten any yet. Can't wait!

    Enjoy your bounty! :joy

If you want "baby" lettuce, harvest them when they are about 4 to 6 inches tall. You can either pull the entire plant out of the ground or you can cut the plant about 1 inch up from the ground. The cut plants will put out another crop of leaves in about 2 to 3 weeks.

Really? Cool, think I'll try that because I only planted one short row, that way I can get more out of it! Thanks for the info!

I love to wrap fish in lettuce and bake it or you can add lettuce to soups!...you can also do a grilled romain if you have a whole head cut it in half butter or oil and stick it on the grill....or just keep sticking the leaves in your mouth I would be!!!!

LOL yeah Nursey I had baby romaines and Twin A & B thought it was regular ole green leaf lettuce and promptly took the paring knife to it.

            :nono

But it is good using the lettuce as a wrapper for steak too...done Nursey Style with the good Korean marinade. YUM

Actually when I harvest, I cut by the ground taking care not pull the roots up, as we should get at least 1 - 2 more cuts from a plant.

I'm glad that not2late and mrslee have shared their knowledge! I would have ripped those suckers right out by the roots! :no That's so cool that I can get more than one harvest out of them! Very cool indeed.

You can also grow a fall crop. Sow the seeds around August or September for the lettuce in October through November. I'm further north than you MoG, and I've kept lettuce growing into December! Always nice to have a start-from-the-garden salad on Thanksgiving Day.

This year will be the first time we have things growing in the winter. We had tomatos until Thanksgiving last year! :nod

I'm planning on planting broccoli and cauliflower and garlic and onions and whatever else I can find that can stand a little cold.
