They're fried patties made of ground chickpeas, onion, garlic, parsley and spices like cumin.
I used to eat them (baked not fried) when I was a low fat vegetarian and vegan because they were tasty and provided protein----but I also gained an incredible amount of weight as low fat veggie too....
If you're at goal and in maintenance lentils are actually a low glycemic food and you can have them more often than other legumes.
However you should be careful with falafel, it may have fillers in it. Though since you said it was a salad i'm sure there weren't alot of falafel patties on it?
I used to eat it all the time, on a pita with garlic/yogurt sauce and onions and tabouleh. mmmm i miss it.
here's a basic recipe if found as well:
4 cup uncooked chickpeas
1/4 cup packed chopped cilantro
1/4 cup packed chopped parsley
3 tablespoon garlic (powder or chopped fresh)
1/4 onion
2 tablespoon olive oil
1 tablespoon each salt & pepper
1/4 cup tahini
1/4 cup baking powder(optional)
Directions:
Soak beans overnight. Put all ingredients in a food processor and blend until it's combined, Scraping down the sides as needed. don't add any water or extra oil.
Bake or fry in olive oil until golden brown, take time so the insides are all cooked as well. This recipe goes well with a simple tahini sauce.
As Megs indicated, Falafel is made mainly with legumes but often has a flour/crumb coating and if you purchase it at take-outs, it has often been deep-fried. It is commonly eaten in the middle-east - Egypt, Lebanon, Turkey etc and is a great snack food that travels well. As Jen says, it is extremely nutritious, esp if you can make them yourself and watch what ingredients you put in them

Best falafel I ever ate was homemade falafel made by the wife of an Israeli doctor I once worked with----great stuff! It wasn't too over-spiced. They were light, not soggy or heavy. She also did something to the tahini sauce, maybe added extra sesame oil, too that made it taste really really good.
Then why the Moggy dearest? Do they cause you to gain or crave?
I haven't checked the carb count, but knowing what they're made from makes me think its high, plus, you really need pita bread and tahini sauce to enjoy them. That's why the
