  • Is wheat bran as good as flax?

Is wheat as fibrous, equalling, essentially the same as flax, or is it better to stay away from wheat?

I know people have wheat allergy issues. Just wondering if staying away from bran is a good thing in favor of the flax.

Thanks! sorry for all the questions. I'm learning!

Re: Is wheat bran as good as flax?

I love wheat bran, I used it all the time mixed with flax. Sometimes I make a wheat/flax mix when I'm grinding my flax seeds I add some whole unprocessed wheat bran and grind together.

It doesn't have the same omega 3/6 benefits as flax but is a wonderful food i think! It's way lower calorie than flax, but the carbs are slightly higher. Still, It's not a really high carb grain:

the one I buy lists per 1/2 cup serving:

    77 cals
    2g fat
    19g carbs
    13 g fibre
    2g protein

I've never had issues with it.

It's a very dry grain keep in mind..that's why i usually mix with 1/2 flax when baking or making pancakes with it.

    hope this helps!

I haven't tried wheat bran, but I often use oat bran. Usually mixed with ground flax. Sometimes I'll soak it with some hot water for making muffins, and then add extra eggs. I've never really wrote down my recipes for muffins.

If you're sensitive to wheat, then avoid the bran. Curiously though, I found that wheat bran has no bad effect on my asthma, while some other wheat products do. Anyhow, I spoon a tablespoon of wheat bran mixed with wheat germ on my cottage cheese or yogurt.

I'm not too crazy about flax, mainly due to the slimy texture (reminds me of booger mucus).

I read this comment a couple of days ago and tried a mock oatmeal today. And it took some deep breathing and no eye contact and extra splenda to get it down thanks to this comment that kept running through my head...LOL! Definately a required taste.

The difference between snot and broccoli is that kids won't eat broccoli. ;^o

I find my local grocery store selling it in the flour/corn starch aisle. If you can't find it there, look in the health foods section, but expect to pay more than $1-2/pound.
