  • What can U tell me about Carb Countdown Dairy beverage

I am a big fan of Dana Carpenter cookbooks and when I saw she had one for Low Carb Smoothies, I ordered it.
Well most of the recipes call for Carb Countdown which living in Japan I have never seen or heard of.
    What is it?
    Do you like it?
(you might know that I am retiring in 19 days, and hours and coming home so I really need to know these thing. LOL

Some people thinks it tastes like real milk. I, however, don't. On it's own it has a very odd fake taste to me---almost like powdered milk, almost like canned evaporated milk, but definitely no where near real milk.

So the only times I use it is to make yogurt or use it in something well-flavored like eggnog.

I bought it once. I'm a milk girl and wasn't fooled by the flavor. Almost has a slight tartness to it and an added fat flavor. I would rather make my shakes w/LC Westsoy Soymilk. Tastes better, all natural (except the splenda in Choc and Vanilla flavors). I love Dana Carpenter too, but if I make her shakes I stick with cream or 1/2 and 1/2 diluted with water. Less expensive, less carbs, tastes better.

I like it as yogurt but this milk lover couldn't handle the taste as milk either.

I, too, definitely can't sit down and drink a glass, but I think I'm a little more liberal in the baking applications I use it in. I find it's great in:

          Cheese sauce
          Cream Sauce
          Sausage gravy
Chocolate Shakes (with turkey hill ice cream)
Chocolate Milk (homemade preferably but the pre-made cc chocolate milk isn't horrible)
Biscuits (when I run out of buttermilk)

Ok, so what your telling me is that it doesn't taste like milk,,,,,but since Scott uses it in shakes and cheese sauce do you think that as a smoothie base it might be do'able?

            Many Berry Smoothie
            1 cup plain non-fat yogurt
1/2 cup Carb Countdown dairy beverage
1/2 cup berry blend, frozen blue, rasp, black, straw
            1 T strawberry sugar-free syrup
            1 T raspberry sugar-free syrup
            1 T blueberry sugar-free syrup
            Combine until smooth

Re: What can U tell me about Carb Countdown Dairy beverage

Like I posted I think it's okay in something that's well-flavored, ie: doesn't focus on the real dairy flavor of milk. So for things like eggnog and shakes it isn't bad because those foods have other flavors to mask the fake taste of the Carb Down. It also doesn't make a bad "sweet tofu"---that almond flavored dish you can get at dim sum places.

But to sit and drink a glass of the stuff---I certainly can't do it.

In a smoothie it should be fine.

I saw they had an eggnog out now too... I love eggnog, but I think I could make one with less carbs (I think theirs had like 9 carbs)

some folk love it as is Desertthorn milk lovers don't just as we learned to love foods without sugars your tastes are changing as you progress on your Atkins. if you think you will like it you will. since there are many mnay taste testings for Dana Carpenders stuff before it ever gets in the book. I'm sure it will be good. I know I like her recipes.

Our Walmart had the egg nog kind today. It has 4 net carbs per serving. I am an egg nog conesieur, and it was pretty good. I prefer my mother -in - laws homeade though. But, we do buy alot of egg nog premade this time of year.

Another SKIM MILK lover here! I tried the Fat-free (skim?) version and hated it!! I, too, have used it in recipes, but that's it.

                      Good Luck!

Thanks for the imput Nomore. Appreciate it. I think I've decided to try it in the smoothies cause I love whipped fruit...etc

I guess it's like all knockoffs, JUST NOT LIKE THE REAL THING
