  • Lucky New Year dishes?

I was sitting here staring out the window and smelling the Black Eyed peas in my oven that I will take to work to share today ..and wondered where on earth this tradition started for me?

I have as long as I can remember had black eyed peas on New Years to start the year off right...

now mind you I was born in Providence RI ...in a Southern Italian neighborhood raised by women from the Caribbean ....

I have no idea when and where this tradition started or why black eyed peas are lucky...

but I do know I can NOT start a year with out them ....

do you have a lucky NY food?

My husband is from Wisconsin and he has pickled herring ....he has no idea why either

    Happy New Year you guys

my black eyed peas are curried

I have never in my life had a black eyed pea! My DH also eats the pickled herring. I make sure he gets any of his kisses before hand.

I asked DH he said his family has always done it to bring good luck. The also all hold money in their hands to ensure a money filled new year. He thought it was just his family that ate the herring

Black eyed peas, collard greens. I know some families from the Northern parts of the US who eat cabbage in place of the collard greens.

            Editing to add...

Heidi, the black-eyed peas symbolism is that each pea represents either 1 month, 1 week or 1 day of "good luck" for the new year--of course it depends on the particular family/community. I've even read that the peas represent "pieces of luck", so the more you eat, the more luck you will have. The caviar thing is similar to it.

Thank you Megs!!! I never knew that.... Now I wonder who started it in my life

awww who cares they are good and I love that whole "pieces of luck" thing ...guess I better eat a huge bowl of them at lunch today

I will miss the caviar this year however ...but with out the vodka and the late night ...and the fact it costs way more than I can deal with this year... black eyed peas are good enough

I have to buy the pickled herring for my husband however ..I forgot

if you had any leftover pork by NewYrs day then you had had a good yr. remmebr familys were big back then so pork on New Yrs came to symbolize good fortune. the peas are for luck and the more eatten the more luck you are supposed to get and greens on NEwYrs again was a sign you were fortunate and eating them came to be thought of as a way to ensure you goit more and thus more wealth so it is Hog, greens and peas here.

In Italy everyone eats lentils at New Year (usually with pig's trotter). The more lentils you eat, the more money in the coming year! Also, people traditionally wear something red...so all the shops sell sexy red undies!

They cut off the pig's trotter??? Guess the piggie didn't eat any blackeyed peas, cause that don't sound too lucky for the pig!!
