  • Thoughts on Low Carb and Lovin' It

    Hi,

Today I managed to catch most of an episode of the new FTV show 'Low Carb and Lovin' It' with George Stella.

My initial impressions are that it is good that he is most likely going to encourage more low-carbers to try some adventurous cooking for themselves, but at the same time, I have some misgivings about some of the things I have seen already in only one episode.

First of all he referred to the sugar-based carbs inside of a regular teriyaki sauce as 'healthy carbs' while this is obviously false.

He made a salad of iceburg lettuce with a 'chinese vinagrette' and claimed it was 0 carbs per serving. Considering the dressing contained lemon juice, and the salad lettuce and chopped peppers, as well as ginger and other ingredients that have carbs, this is obviously not 0 carbs per serving. Perhaps very low, but not 0.

In addition he claimed that sesame seeds have 0 net carbs. According to fitday (which I don't take as an absolute resource, but tend to trust more in this case) there are about 15 grams net carbs per cup of sesame seeds. Perhaps the carbs work out to very close to 0 in smaller amounts, but they are still there.

Overall I tought his recipes were decent, and that overall he will probably have a positive impact, but I was quite unimpressed by the factual errors presented in his program. As a matter of personal taste I also dislike the fact that one of the first episodes was on low-carb desserts, when learning to defeat a sweet tooth is something we should all be working towards. I fully admit this last point to being a matter of personal bias however. What does everyone else think who has seen this show?

I really enjoy the show for entertainment value and ideas, and I agree with you that the carb counts he throws out seem to be incorrect.

I haven't tried any of his recipes myself yet, but as far as entertainment I think it is a good show.

He has lost 240lbs on his low carb trek, so you certainly have to respect that! :geek

I wonder did he do "just a low carb diet" or did he do Atkins?

I have enjoyed his show for the most part, I do wish they would run it at another time though as I always seem to miss it.

I dont watch as much food tv as I used to most of my time is spent one here now, I am sure thats a change for the better!!!!

In an interview with him, I saw the following. I am assuming based on this he did a "Stella" version of Atkins.

The Stella family's transformation began when he read Dr. Robert Atkins' New Diet Revolution and started counting carbohydrates. As chefs -- wife Rachel is a commercial baker -- the couple personalized the plan and dropped pounds. To date, George has lost 245 pounds, Rachel, 75 pounds and their sons Christian and Anthony 120 and 70 pounds, respectively.

I've seen all of the shows.

I find the show rather weak.

I don't think he is doing anybody any favors by averaging at least one dessert per episode.

I don't care for his over use of the chemicals such as Splenda. (This alone knocks him out of "Atkins" as the 3 per day limit on sweetners never goes away)

But most importantly, he is focusing on converting normally high carb food to low carb versions. There is plenty to do and learn about normally low carb foods. Enough for several seasons. Shoot, MOST people don't even know how to cook a steak. He could start there.

I wish he would limit the sweets, limit the chemicals, and limit the "faux". A little of each of these is just fine. But not the whole show.

:joy I love that show...never tried any of his recipes, but its cool i guess. I watch food network sometimes for no reason, lol...that and mtv are probably the channels i most watch. Also, any of you guys seen his son...he lost an incredible amount of weight...well they all did, but if u saw his son you'd never think he had a weight problem...he's skin and bones.

I love the show too. Since it's called "low carb" and not Atkins and loving it, I don't get too worked up over the recipes that don't exactly fit. I think the main point of his show is to demonstrate to people that you can eat low carb and eat well.

I've made several of the recipes and they all turned out great.

He does use a lot of Splenda but I just use a lot less. My taste for sweets is gradually slacking off.

When I make sweet things I don't go by the recipe, I just add sweetener until it tastes right to me. I usually winds up being a lot less than the recipe calls for.
