  • Thursday's whats for dinner thread?

    Time for a new thread.

Tonite we are going to be a little boring but. I'm making bacon cheese burgers on my new George Foreman grill. We'll have a side salad with freshly sliced cucumbers and freshly grated parmesean to go with it!

    What are you having?

Roast chicken--actually a rotissiere chicken I'm picking up from a supermarket on the way home. I'll have sauteed collard greens on the side along with a salad of arugula and baby greens salad with goat cheese, sliced grapes and toasted walnuts.

Crustless quiche (bacon and swiss cheese); salad with feta in the dressing: maybe some grilled radicchio; blackberries with Greek yogurt.

Now, I'm hungry! Glad it's nearly supper time here!

Salad of baby and mature Romaine lettuces tossed with homemade garlic mayonnaise and a few crumbles of Roquefort blue cheese, with avocado, shrimp, bacon and cracked black pepper. Dessert is a small slice of protein powder/Splenda based cheesecake topped with a teaspoon of thick Double Devon cream and a sprinkle of unsweetened organic cocoa powder.

MoG, arugula is also called "rockett". It's a member of the cabbage family. The flavor is peppery and nutty. I think the "nutty" flavor is similar to roasted peanuts! It's too strong for my tastebuds to eat a salad of only arugula, so I mix it with mild tasting lettuces. Since I still have some red oak leaf and green leaf lettuce growing in my containers outside, I used them in the salad.

If you've eaten those "mesclun" salads in restaurants or bought the mesclun mix salads in a bag at the grocery store, you've probably eaten arugula. Here's a pic of it.

                            http://www.gourmetsleuth.com/arugula.htm

I grew some last year and it did very well. It's best in salad, however, when it's young. The older plants are better cooked. Oh yeah, another good thing about arugula is you can cut it and it will grow again. And it can be grown for spring and fall harvesting.

LOL, I guess I have eaten it, It was in the mixed salad green seeds that I planted and in fact I still have some growing in my garden! I didn't even know I'd had it! Thanks for the pic. And you're right, it keeps growing, in fact all of my lettcues did, I just cut what I needed for dinner and the plants just keep on growing, problem now is that they are starting to taste bitter, I guess its the constant temperature changes from below freezing to the 70's that we have been experiencing for at least a month now.
