  • sheppards pie?

by any chance has anyone tried making a sheppards pie with mashed cauliflower instead of potatoes? just not sure what to add to the meat to make the 'gravy' ...i though maybe some sour cream or cream cheese, and shredded cheeses? or do you think maybe a bit of flax may thicken it?..also not sure if maybe the mashed cauliflower may be too wet to use? I've used it as a side dish but never in a recipe

I figure i'd rather ask before i start playing around and waste good hamburger meat for nothing!

let your cauliflower mixture drain very well, but I think it should work fine.

A sour cream, cream cheese mixture should work great for the sauce, I wouldn't worry about using flax in this particular instance. If all the grease is drained off the hamburger, the cheeses should be enough to hold it together.

you can use the mashed cauli, but I use either mashed turnips or mashed kolhrabi bulbs. (I did use pumpkin puree once with a turkey sheppards pie---it was FABULOUS!)

Wow that's great!! Thank you both for your help...I'm going to try it this week, and I'll test on my hubby (who would live on sheppards pie if I let him)

I actually have some leftover pumpkin puree here from a loaf i was making so maybe i'll even try both pumpkin and cauliflower...

        thanks again

          OK

Im going to be very British now and teach everyone a lesson

          SHEPHERDS'S PIE
          IS MADE WITH MINCED/GROUND LAMB
          :guns :guns :guns :guns
          NOT MINCED/GROUND BEEF

:nono :nono :anger :anger :anger :anger :nono :nono
When made with minced beef its called
          COTTAGE PIE

I know I am probably going to be accused of being picky .... but it really irritates me!!! Everytime I go to a Renaissance Faire when im visiting the USA they have Shepherds Pie for sale and I want to ask them where they got their recipe from as its the beefiest lamb ive ever tasted!!

            Lamb is disgusting. :tounge

We have a lot of things that we call by different names. For instance

What you call "jelly" we spread on our toast or have w/ peanut butter to make sandwiches...here we call "jelly" jello or gelatin.

What you call a lift we call an elevator.

What you call a Loo we call a John.

None of us is wrong--we just call things by different names.

Bambina's correct. Shepard's pie has lamb. Cottage pie has beef. (I won't even touch the subject of a Cornish Pasty.....)

Frankly, mom just used to call it a meat pie, which I know isn't quite correct too.....

Maybe we should call it a mashed casserole?

                Well ...

                Thank you not2late .....

My comment wasnt about how we name things differently but about a total ingredients mix-up!!!!

I think you could call it CATTLEMAN PIE or HERDSMAN PIE or COWBOY PIE !! :yes

                But not SHEPHERDS PIE :anger
